One of first-wave ska's unassailable masterpieces, this is an essential for soul ska, and reggae fans alike. An original UK release on Wirl, this was part of my personal collection. It's been meticulously cared for, stored safely, and honestly evaluated. I love it but I'm moving and simply can't take my entire collection (along that line, see my user page for tons of other LP auctions!!)

At a time in which all the mysteries of the record world seemed to have been solved, albums such as these renew one's faith in the essential impossibility of ever finding out all there is to know about the music of the past. No artist credits are given for the mostly instrumental tracks, and the track listings on the sleeve don't exactly jibe with the tunes heard on the record. It's reasonably certain that this is Jamaican ska from the mid-'60s, probably originally produced for Top Deck records. If you relax, stop worrying about who did what, and just listen to the music, it's good ska, with plenty of the compulsive rhythms and sour horns that count as the style's most attractive attributes. The best song (an educated guess would credit it to the Gaytones) is the vocal "Wings of a Dove"; with its irresistibly chipper melody, it would deserve a place on anthologies of ska's all-time greatest hits.
