Another hard to find original pressing by a blues great.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION & NOTES:

• Mississippi Delta blues singer Skip James's rare Vanguard recording.
• Today! consists of:   Skip James - vocals, guitar and piano

• From Wikipedia: "Skip James' sound was unique to the blues genre and although he influenced other blues musicians, such as Robert Johnson, few have been able to recreate his style. His high pitched voice seems otherworldly and frail [with] a 'preaching' style of singing...   A gifted and distinctive guitarist, he often used an open D-minor tuning (DADFAD) which gave his instrument a dark and desolate tone, reportedly learned from his musical mentor, bluesman Henry Stuckey. Stuckey in turn was said to have acquired it from Bahamanian soldiers during the First World War. James' classically-informed, finger-picking style was fast and clean, using the entire register of the guitar with heavy, hypnotic bass lines.

  James' signature lick in open D-minor involves a fingered slide of the third string from the second to the fourth fret; a slide on the same string from the fourth back to the second fret; striking the fourth string open; then hammering the third string in the first fret." 

•  This record appears to possible have been unplayed, with no spindle markings.

• Gold Vanguard label.

• The cover is in nice, crisp shape, with the following conditions noted:  Some light indications of ring wear on the front and less so on the back. Some light seam wear but no splits. Occasional areas of 'age spotting' (yellowing) on back spine edge bottom of jacket, upon very close inspection shows what might be subtle signs of having been exposed to some dampness while in storage. It is dry and crisp, with no staining, but along the bottom has a bit of light 'unsmooth texture', indicative to us of once possibly having been exposed to some moisture. Small initials or number written in pen on lower right corner.
