Posting to Russia: Yes, I do post to Russia. But delivery can take up to 4 to 6 weeks from the UK. So please be patient. I will submit a tracking number to the winning bidder, and when the packet arrives there it can be followed online using the Russian post website.

Rarity: Scarce as a first issue, also very difficult to find in this hardly played condition. This has the first E. J. Day cover which is wear-prone, but very impressive with little at all. The heavy-pressed record plays beautifully. These early glam-rock albums most often purchased by teenagers of the time and many were heavily played on the most basic of record players. But this beauty is a rarer exception. Cover-protected and probably only played a couple of times. Such examples are elusive and difficult to find.

Brief Info: The first live Slade album and first to chart in the UK where it peaked at No 2 due to the success of 1971 singles, especially ‘Coz I Luv You’ which topped the singles charts. The band had gained considerable as a superb live band, and they wanted to capture that success on record – and it worked to perfection. This is loud and powerful, the material impressive and it sold well. Produced by Chas Chandler who had also produced the first two Jimi Hendrix Experience albums, quality was assured. As stated above, finding originals in top condition is much harder, and this is a beauty. Fans and collectors, do not lose this one.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt quite smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, includes the January 1972 manufactured polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: Probably the very best example of this classic cover I have seen since the early 1970s. Few owners cover-protected these early glam-rock albums and the difference is immediately apparent. Both sides retain supreme deep unfaded and barely rubbed artwork with hardly any creasing at all – the odd tiny tip one apart. The lack of ugly ring wear on the back especially is seldom seen and no sticker issues. Both surfaces almost take you back to 1972 and will prove immensely difficult to match or find better on the first EJD-made original.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A couple of tiny surface spot pulls (look very hard) and a couple of fine edge hairline creases – that apart, this looks amazing with any other blemishes minuscule. The artwork is fantastic and note the E. J. Day imprint as seen in close-up with the cartoon graphic from the inside.

Top Edges: Both straight and flush with any rub traces tiny, very little and faint.

Bottom Edges: Almost as above, any rubbing very patchy and light, impressive on vulnerable storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with barely any thickening even as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A stunning fresh spine that comes as close to reminding of as-made as they get. Solid, straight with no compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn, surface rubbing tiny and faint, even the vulnerable folds are nigh-on pristine.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, excellent or better shape retained with no heavy knocks. A small crease on the top front corner tip.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this unforgiving 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the polylined inner is date-coded 0172 (January 1972). It has two neat window circles and the lining remains clear and fresh. Most of any creasing confined to one bottom corner. The paper lightly darkened with age – few avoid that – all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better. A superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant live album that many regard as one of the best ever, plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This is loud, quite raw and powerful, very well recorded indeed with huge atmosphere and presence. Play this loud and you have a genuine feeling of being there. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
