This short-lived four-piece was born at the yearly six-week "Midwestern Band and Art"
camp in Lawrence, Kansas. In July 1967, hundreds of teenagers attended this event.
Many of them were into folk-rock as well as classical music. In July 1968, many of the
same teenagers who'd attended the 1967 camp attended the 1968 camp too. Smack
was formed at the 1968 camp and since there was only less than five of the six weeks to
go after their formation they practised cover versions, mostly of Cream and Jimi Hendrix
songs. They played dances and gigs at the camp and their fellow students got together a
sign-up list for those who wanted a Smack album for posterity. So a few days after the
camp they went into a local studio and recorded nine cuts - four Jimi Hendrix covers:
"Purple Haze", "Fire", "Manic Depression" and "Foxey Lady" (their spelling!); three Cream
covers: "Sunshine Of Your Love", "I'm So Glad" and "Swalbr"; a re-hash of The Kinks'
"Set Me Free" and Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth". The vocals (which sound flat)
were then dubbed over the music. The studio struck a deal with RCA to have 100-150 LP's
pressed. They were sent to the students who signed the purchase sheet - hence the rarity...
Worth a spin? Definitely, a few wrong notes were hit, the vocals are flat in places and some
of the songs a bit slow, but some of the Jimi Hendrix covers, particularly the finale (and their
tour de force) Foxey Lady, are great. Note the value of an original in 2005 !!!
