SMALL FACES From The Beginning ORIG UK DECCA MONO FIRST SCARCE CLEAN EXAMPLE
The Small Faces, From The Beginning.
Original 1967 UK pressed Decca Records mono LP, LK 4879.
First pressing with distinctive Decca grooved deep red labels and silver print with non-boxed Decca logo.
A generally very well preserved issue, and although not mint an unusually clean and bright copy. Most dealers have had this one pass through their hands a few times, but as with early Stones albums, it is so rarely found in even passable condition.
The vinyl here grades a strict VG. The LP has clearly been played, but moderately carefully so, and I'd imagine that it has been carefully stored for much of its life.
The labels still have a very high gloss and are free of marks or inscriptions. Some spider trail marks are visible, but only at certain angles. For some reason there are more of these to side two than side one, but in all instances the marks are not excessive.
The vinyl surfaces still have a high gloss and are free of dulling or greying. A fair amount of light hairline scuffs are visible, but these are isolated marks on otherwise very clean surfaces - the surfaces are not a grey network of fine marks. The majority of these marks are fairly inconsequential. There is just one short hairline which runs a little deeper. This is a very short mark, and causes some soft consecutive ticks at the end of "That Man" and some occasional soft ticks at the beginning of the next track. They are then very rapidly dispensed with. The mark does not run deep enough to cause ticks throughout its entire length.
Else the LP plays very cleanly with just some very minor and short-lived crackle, which is always behind the music. The surfaces are underlyingly quiet (including much of the run-ins and band separators), and the recorded sound is still very crisp and bold and without groove wear or distortion. Still provides a generally excellent listening experience throughout.
After play testing the LP I noticed that the needle had dislodged a few specks of debris, so undoubtedly there is only room for further improvement in the recorded sound.
White paper die-cut inner sleeve is in EX condition and has suffered no browning or inscriptions etc.
External sleeve is an even cleaner survivor and so rarely found as nice as this. Grades very close to EX. Main panels are bright and clean with just a fraction of storage ringwear rubbing visible to matt rear panel (see photo). Front laminate is unpeeled and intact and without air pockets or blemishes. Just a very few tiny pinch line creases leading in from edge areas. Rear panel has just a touch of age/handling darkening to the white borders. No surface loss, no stickers, no inscriptions. Edges are superbly preserved with the spine in great shape. The entry side is crisp and unfeathered with just fractional dinging.
In summary a really nice surviving example, with the vinyl much better than average and the sleeve in tip top shape.
