SNAFU
'S/T'
WWA, UK, 1973
WWA003
WHEN BOBBY Harrison left Procol Harum (and the drum stool) to form heavy blues rock band Freedom (a Vertigo signing) he set in motion a series of rather excellent groups all benefiting from his superb husky, full throated vocal style. Freedom flirted with a degree of attention but ultimately fell apart when their second Vertigo album failed to springboard them to significant commercial success. SNAFU, his next band, seemed posed to make that leap and this, their debut album, is fair evidence that that assessment was not wide of the mark
Enlisting killer slide guitarist Micky Moody who, like Harrison, was also a Vertigo signee (with Juicy Lucy) and ex Paladin man Peter Solley on keyboards the band gelled into a formidable unit fusing a soulful funky sound with a heavy blues rock undercurrent. Of course, this would mean nothing if the material wasn't up to spec - fortunately the songs are first class ranging from full on guitar driven anthems to surprising low down and dirty funk rock. Harrison's vocals are simply a knockout - his tone and delivery is every bit as good as Frankie Miller or James Dewer (Robin Trower band). In short, this is one of the best rock albums from a seasoned bunch of early seventies musicians as you'll likely run across. Highly recommended.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
Pressing: WWA, UK, 1973
Vinyl: Super nice clean copy. No spindle marks and no other signs of wear. Hard to find in this condition. Was my keeper copy for 25 years. Grades as top MINT-!
Cover: Any collector will tell you that it's virtually impossible to find this particular Roger Dean designed gatefold cover in decent clean shape. Well, you can breathe a sigh of relief as this is one of the nicest copies I've seen. The black cover is often prone to heavy wear but this copy is largely clean and unsoiled - just a few light storage rubs. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no ring-wear and no creases. The spine is beautifully stiff and square. Grades as top Ex+
Inserts: None
