From Leeds, this was one of the darkest turns ever taken by a chart-topping synth-pop act. Released in 1983, it found Marc Almond and David Ball retreating from the pop immediacy of Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret into something rawer and more narcotic - an album steeped in obsession, decay and the faded glamour of late-night lives. Songs like 'Where the Heart Is' and 'Numbers' wrap sordid domestic tales and sexual melancholy in shimmering synths. while 'Heat' and 'Baby Doll' stretch into near-cinematic mood pieces. Even its excess the deranged 'Hendrix Medley', the eerie 'Martin' feels deliberate, like an act of self-sabotage turned art form. Four decades later, it still burns with bruised intensity.
