SOL HOOPII steel guitar 1930's Haven of Rest 534 gospel sacred 78 Hawaiian RARE Shipping Info Description RARE vintage 78 rpm 10" record: BRINGING IN THE SHEAVES (G. A. Minor) b/w SOFTLY AND TENDERLY (W. L. Thompson) - Loren Whitney on Organ and Vibraharp, and SOL HOOPII on STEEL GUITAR. Haven of Rest Records, HR 534. No printed date, but circa 1930's-1940's. An incredibly scarce record - very hard to find any records on this label, which appears to have focused on spiritual music, white gospel, and organ hymns. But this one has Sol Hoopii (1902-1953), who was born Solomon Ho?opi?i Ka?ai?ai in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was a Native Hawaiian guitarist, claimed by many as the all-time best lap steel guitar virtuoso, and he is one of the most famous original Hawaiian steel guitarists. According to Wikipedia, In 1938, he gave up his secular career to join the evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson (founder of the Foursquare Church), writing and performing songs for her tours. Again - I can't find any information regarding these Haven of Rest records, or of Hoopii playing with Loren Whitney, or recording sessions during his years with McPherson.
CONDITION: EX (glossy, very clean with only some minor scuffing and a couple of very light scratches that I can barely feel with a thumbnail; labels have some minimal rubbing around the deep groove).
