SOMETHING TO SING ABOUT ~ BOX SET
SOMETHING TO SING ABOUT - Various Folk Artists
VERY RARE 3 LP BOX SET
Vinyl: Mint, box is sealed.
Box: Sealed, no writing, holes, stains or seam splits. Lower left corner has shrink tear with slight wear.
Background: Milton Okun is an American arranger best known as a member of The Belafonte Folk Singers with Harry Belafonte. Okun, a musician, singer, teacher, conductor, arranger, publishing executive, and author, was the most successful popularizer of folk music in the 60s and 70s, arranging and producing for the Chad Mitchell Trio, Peter, Paul and Mary, and John Denver, among many others.
In 1968 he published the book Something To Sing About: The Personal Choices of America's Folk Singers. The book presents a spectrum of music covering over four centuries, reflecting the variety and scope of our folk-song heritage. More than 70 favorite folk songs, the personal choices of America's great folk artists. Book includes lyrics of each song with piano arrangements and guitar chords. Also included are photos and profiles of the singers.
The box set was produced as a companion to the book. My understanding that it was never released commercially. I do not believe a CD version has ever appeared. Contained on the LPs are tracks performed by various artists that are unique and appear no where else in the recording world.
To find this box set, of such historic significance, still sealed is, I believe, just short of winning the lottery. I'm including the 241 page hard back book as a bonus to the sale. It is in very good shape with no writing or other makings. Artists performing on the 3 LPs include:
- Josh White - St. James Infirmary
- Ian and Sylvia - Four Strong Winds
- Odetta - John Henry
- Mississippi John Hurt - Candy Man Blues
- John Denver - The Wagoner Lad
