Two bands famously formed from the ashes of Uncle Tupelo - Wilco led by Jeff Tweedy, and Son Volt under Jay Farrar. The latest from Farrar and his cohorts finds the band returning to the elemental country and folk that informed their earliest work.The result, Sound Signal Serenades, feels very much like a return to form. 'Don Quixote's Dream' taps into that classic Son Volt sound, with its steady gait and understated melodic pull, something long-time fans will recognise immediately. Elsewhere, the album leans into a stripped-back approach that allows Farrar's songwriting to take centre stagee. Themes of memory, American landscapes and quiet resilience run throughout, with the band exploring what actually made America great. Given the more overtly political tone of 2019's Union, this reflective turn feels like a natural counterpart rather than a retreat. Sound Signal Serenades may not shout for attention, but it reinforces what Son Volt have always done best, crafting thoughtful, grounded songs that resonate over time.
