Robeson's four disc set of anti-fascist protest folk songs, sung in English, Russian and German, issued at the height of World War II, when relations between the U.S. and Soviet Union, allied against global fascism, were at their highest.
A truly remarkable survival, inscribed on the edge of the first sleeve by the great & tragic Paul Robeson (who signs twice) to members of the "Labor Youth League" by Robeson and his pianist on the discs, Lawrence Brown. Fantastic anti-Nazi jacket art. The set is in very nice condition, with all discs playable.
Robeson's signature is uncommon, especially on such a telling artifact. The "Labor Youth League" was the youth club of the U.S. Communist Party. Robeson's association with such left wing organizations, during the period in which he inscribed on this album, was to be an ongoing source of persecution for the brilliant baritone. Earlier in 1949, Robeson had made a much publicized visit to the USSR, making him a monumental target for HUAC and other relentless "Red Hunters." The 1950s would see Robeson descend into the hell of blacklisting.

Paul Leroy Robeson (April 9, 1898 – January 23, 1976) was an American bass baritone concert artist and stage and film actor who became famous both for his cultural accomplishments and for his political activism. Educated at Rutgers College and Columbia University, he was also a star athlete in his youth. He also studied Swahili and linguistics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London in 1934. His political activities began with his involvement with unemployed workers and anti-imperialist students whom he met in Britain and continued with support for the Loyalist cause in the Spanish Civil War and his opposition to fascism. In the United States he also became active in the Civil Rights Movement and other social justice campaigns. His sympathies for the Soviet Union and for communism, and his criticism of the United States government and its foreign policies, caused him to be blacklisted during the McCarthy era.

Lawrence Benjamin Brown (August 29, 1893 – December 25, 1972) was an African-American singer, composer and pianist born in Jacksonville, Florida. He is best known for his arrangements of Negro spirituals, many of which he performed as accompanist for Paul Robeson, performing on piano and singing harmony.
