Here is another from my personal collection. A very rare and sought after blues UK 1st pressing original! This album was originally recorded by chess USA and released on the Chess labels in the US and on Pye International in the UK! This album is not just rare because it is an original 1st pressing but also for ints condition for an unbelievable 45 years old! (1st published in 1964) Played at loud volume prior to listing on a top system using a dedicated mono cartridge the audio was stunning cristal clear and very vibrant, almost as good as it gets, so rare to ever find like this, without the normal clicks or pops often found on these 45 year old blues albums! This album is complete with the original Garrod & Lofthouse flipback cover in at least excellent condition, all text can be read and is unbelievably clean for its age. This also comes with the original Pye International advertising serpier sleeve! mega rare and very sought after like this!!!

Sonny Boy Williamson (John Lee Curtis Williamson, 30 March 1914 — 1 June 1948) was an American blues harmonica player, and the first to use the name Sonny Boy Williamson!!!. 

He was born near Jackson, Tennessee in 1914. His original harmonica recordings were considered to be in the country blues style, but he soon demonstrated skill at making harmonica a lead instrument for the blues, and popularized the instrument for the first time in a more urban blues setting. He has been called "the father of modern blues harp"!!!.

His very first recording, "Good Morning, School Girl", was a major hit on the 'race records' market in 1937. He was hugely popular among black audiences throughout the whole southern U.S. as well as in the midwestern industrial cities such as Detroit and his home base in Chicago, and his name was synonymous with the blues harmonica for the next decade. Other well-known recordings of his include "Shake the Boogie", "You Better Cut that Out", "Sloppy Drunk", and "Early in the Morning". Williamson's style influenced a large number of blues harmonica performers, including Billy Boy Arnold, Junior Wells, Sonny Terry, Little Walter, and Snooky Pryor among many others. He was easily the most widely heard and influential blues harmonica player of his generation. His music was also influential on many of his non-harmonica playing contemporaries and successors, including Muddy Waters (who had played with Williamson in the mid-1940s) and Jimmy Rogers (whose first recording in 1946 was as a harmonica player, performing an uncanny imitation of Williamson's style); Rogers later recorded Williamson's songs "My Little Machine" and "Sloppy Drunk" on Chess, and Waters recorded "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" in September 1963 for his Chess LP Folk Singer and again in the 70s when he moved to Johnny Winter's Blue Sky label on CBS!!!.

He was popular enough that by the 1940s, another blues harp player, Aleck/Alex "Rice" Miller, who was based in Helena, Arkansas, began also using the name Sonny Boy Williamson. John Lee is said to have objected to this, though no legal action took place, possibly due to the fact that Miller did not release any records during Williamson's lifetime, and that Williamson played mainly around the Chicago area, and Miller seldom ventured beyond the Mississippi delta region until after Williamson's death. In 1942, John Lee allegedly confronted Miller, but according to guitarist Robert Lockwood, "Big Sonny Boy [Miller] chased Little Sonny Boy [Williamson] away from there. He couldn't play with Rice. Rice Miller could play Sonny Boy's stuff better than he could play it!"!!

Williamson recorded prolifically both as a bandleader and a sideman over the entire course of his career, mainly for the Bluebird record label, with many early sessions taking place in the ballroom on the top floor of the Leland Hotel in Aurora, Illinois; most later sessions were recorded in Chicago. His final recording session took place in December 1947, backing Big Joe Williams. On June 1, 1948, John Lee Williamson was killed in a mugging on Chicago's South Side, as he walked home from his final performance at The Plantation Club at 31st St. and Giles Ave., a tavern just a block and a half away from his home at 3226 S. Giles. Williamson's final words are reported to have been Lord have mercy!!.

His legacy has been overshadowed in the post-war blues era by the popularity of the musician who appropriated his name, Rice Miller, who after Williamson's death went on to record many popular blues songs for Chicago's Checker Records label and others, and toured Europe several times during the 'blues revival' in the early 1960s!.

Williamson is buried at the former site of The Blairs Chapel Church, southwest of Jackson, Tennessee. In 1991, a red granite marker was purchased by fans and family to mark the site of his burial. A Tennessee historical marker, also placed in 1991, indicates the place of his birth and describes his influence on blues music. The historical marker is located south of Jackson on TN Highway 18, at the corner of Caldwell Road!!.

The vinyl

This is the original thick and chunky, heavier type of vinyl (only found like this on original 1st pressings)! The vinyl lays perfectly flat on the turntable and is free from warps or uneveness! On initial inspection the playing surface looks awesome and retains its original sheen from new! Only when looked at angled under a strong light can any blemishes be noticed, just very light suface scuffs\blemishes can possibly be seen, fortunately these have very little if (no) effect on the awesome audio quality that I heard!

The Audio quality

I have very carefuly played this vinyl using a dedicated mono cartridge, on a top system at very loud volume, four times prior to listing! The first thing to note, is that the audio is truly vibrant throughout, cristal clear without any signs of distortion or that this has been overplayed what so ever! Importantly I heard (no) loud clicks or pops and certainly no skips or jumps! Being very highly critical perhapes the odd very, (very) light static crackle may be heard in between tracks but this is mostly obliterated during the audio which is truly stunning throughout! Please note! My main interest and hobby is the audio quality on vinyl. My grading is based the audio quality. This audio must grade at least excellent to excellent plus throughout\ very near perfect on my systems!

Pease note! I always add this disclaimer! Please allow for the odd very light static crackle, mainly in between tracks (not consistant throughout the audio) Please remember that this is an original 45 year old vinyl that would have originally been played on a 45 year old system!

This vinyl has been stored in a case, laying dormant for at least 25 years or more. A constant clean before play is recomended! A build up of dirt and dust in the grooves from laying dormant in a case causes static\crackle\ticks a contant cleaning reduces this and enhances the audio quality!

The Record Sleeve

This is the original poly lined Pie International poly lined advertising serpier record sleeve. There is slight side splits beginning and slight creasing with age only. Please note the vinyl and cover are now stored sepetately!

The Cover

This is the original Garrod & Lofthouse flip back cover (laminated front only) This is in absolutely superbe condition for 45 years old! Just two or three minor\superficial laminate creases to talk of and very minor storage ware to the corners in general nuce and strong and straight! There are (no) splits or tarres! Superbe spine all writing is legable! The rear is exceptionaly clean, any staining or fading you really have to look hard to notice! Super glossy appearance! Very rare like this this must grade at least excellent!
