STARTS WITH THE RARE SAXOPHONE COLOSSUS FANTASY RECORDS 1987 ISSUE OJC-291 FANTASY RECORDS RELEASE
One of the pivotal recordings in bringing about the widespread acceptance of Sonny Rollins as a major figure, Saxophone Colossus inspired critics to write scholarly analysis and fans to revel in the hard-swinging invention, humor, and tender-strength balladry. Up to this album, while most musicians recognized Rollins as one of the new influential forces in the jazz of the Fifties, most critics were carping at Rollins or damning him with faint praise. "St. Thomas," a traditional West Indian melody which Mal Waldron remembered as "The Carnival," was recorded by many artists after Sonny introduced it here, and it remains a jazz standard today. The contributions of Tommy Flanagan's elegant swing, Doug Watkins' steady lift and Max Roach's most musical accompaniment and soloing (hear "Blue 7") make this a landmark album.

Musically, the Album is a BRIDGE between Sonny Rollins who rose quickly to a position of top rank among the saxophonists of the post-bop era of Modern Jazz development in the fifties and the Sonny Rollins to be of the sixties. This is no idle puffing up of this Album’s significance for it bridges a very real gap over two years during which Sonny stopped appearing in public in order to study, try out ideas, and make the time to think about himself, his music, and the environment in which he played and lived.
This Album is not only a historic moment but also a superlative example of why the many gifts of Sonny Rollins -- his firm roots, present accomplishment, and concentration on the future -- are his strongest musical characteristics. Thus, this Album is not only a bright BRIDGE from Sonny’s past to the present but a certain promise to the future as well.

LASTLY SONNY ROLLINS ON IMPULSE IMP-223 LONG OUT OF PRINT AUDIOPHILE 180 GRAM ISSUE - this is a free bonus not sure about this pressing because it has a weird crease in the jacket underneath the plastic wrap seal ON THE BACK. So it could be absolutely prefect pressing or maybe a throw-away - Sonny Rollins made some excellent recordings for Impulse in the mid-1960s, a time when his unassailable skills and acrobatic approach made him a leading saxophonist, and one of the few to rival John Coltrane. On Impulse has only five tracks, but each tells the complex, glorious story of Rollins' talent, especially in the stretched-out solos where his knack for inventively, endlessly de- and re-constructing is evident.
