Description
Up for auction is a very clean copy of the Sonny Rollins album "What's New" released on RCA Victor Records (LPM-2572) in 1962. This is a guaranteed, original mono, deep groove first pressing. Has first pressing "A1" stampers in the dead wax--most copies have later stampings. This is a genuine first pressing! Mono copies of this album are much more rare than the common stereo copies. Comes with the original RCA factory paper inner sleeve and an audiophile protective sleeve for the vinyl.
Cover is in very nice shape. Front graphics are clean and bright, no fading. Has only a tiny hint or ring wear at bottom middle, but it doesn't stand out in any way. Corners are sharp, not bumped. Seams are strong, no splits or cracks, though there are a couple very small chips here and there, but nothing that I would consider serious wear. Back cover appears very clean, bone white, with no signs of any age discoloration which is very common for this jacket. No ring wear. Has a factory inspection stamp in upper right corner. Has a few small moisture spots in upper right. Has very small numbers written on edge in lower right (see photo). Overall, the cover presents very nicely, very attractive. I'd grade the cover as EX+ (Excellent Plus).
Vinyl is in very clean condition. No obvious scratches or scuffs. Retains its original high gloss shine. Perhaps some very faint signs of having been taken in and out of the paper inner sleeve a few times. Labels are clean, no marks around the spindle holes. Very few signs of previous handling or play. I have play tested this record, and it sounds very clean and clear, full-bodied mono sound. A few very faint ticks at the beginning of the sides, but hardly worth mentioning. No serious surface noise or skips to distract you from the overall nice quality of the pressing. I'd grade this record as Near Mint Minus (NM-). I bought this record from jazz guru, Fred Cohen, at his Jazz Record Center in New York City. He graded this record as Near Mint, and it is in the exact same condition as it was when I bought it.
