Some words on this issue: SONO MARI: “Mari-chan to Anata no Yoru” (Polydor – SMR-3013) The rarest of all Sono Mari discs, comes in beautiful psychedelic lettering adorned jacket!!. This copy here is in beautiful condition and still guarantees a fantastic listening experience. One of the greatest female singers ever to come out of Japan. Together with Nishida Sachiko and Chiaki Naomi, Sono Mari is considered as one of the immortal divas to have graced the archipelago with her presence. Like the aforementioned two, Sono Mari’s star shone brightly and vividly but cut her career short once she got married, disappearing from public view. She was active around the same time as Nishida Sachiko, during the mid and late 1960s. But Sono does not sound like Nishida or Chiaki. Sono Mari was gifted with one of those all too rare husky voices, rendering her singing into an enchanting aural experience endowed with hypnotic qualities. Apart from that her voice is filled with a nostalgic longing that trembles through her so often vibrating vocal chords that send shivers down your spine. To make it all even better, Sono also gets backed by the best household orchestra and backing band of those days, the Polydor Orchestra. Great LP set, filled with passion, unanswered love, broken kayokyoko balladry and enka escapades. Husky vocal stylings, lush and splendid backing provided by the Polydor house orchestra.
