Description
This is a special box set LP Music & Images of the city of Brazil called Bahia of the Sound Image LP series No. 3. It is A Portfolio of Photography & Sound. The sounds are by Jim Metzger and the images (photographs) are by the renown photographer Jay Maisel. The album was released in 1977 and is complete with the following four components included in the box:
[A] One 12-inch vinyl disc with the following cuts recorded by Jim Metzner:
Side A: 1) Festival of Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte-Cachoeira; 2) Samba-Terreiro de Jesus, Salvador; Master Vermelho e grupo; 3) Gypsy Song-Itapoã; 4) Samba da Viola-Amaralina, Salvador; 5) Women washing clothes in river near Cachoeira; 6) Fishermen’s Songs-Itapoã; 7) Men husking coconuts-Itaparica Island; 8) “Just Us Two”, Portuguese love song; 9) Festival of St. Lazarus-Itaparica.
Side B: 1) Morning Montage-country road; 2) Hymn/Faith Healer-Salvador; 3) Men Playing Dominoes-Itaparica; 4) “Sertao”-instrumental Bahian folk group; 5) Parrot and Girl-Feira de Santana; 6) Candomblé de Alzira-Itaparica, Song for Omolu, Kétu Nation.
[B] Liner note sheet that describes the above cuts on the 12 inch 33 vinyl LP.
[C] Collection of 12 color photographs by Jay Maisel, most of which compliment the sounds of the vinyl LP. The photographs are printed on glossy, heavy stock paper and each has a caption to explain the subject.
[D] One 7-inch limp vinyl record titled “The Magic of Brazil” which is a selection from the box LP Bahia produced by Sound Image; with 4 cuts on Side A and 2 cuts on Side B.
Each of the four elements originating in this box set are in near mint condition. Not only is this a very interesting collaboration of the sound and images coming from this region of the Northeast of Brazil but it represents an important ethnographic picture of what was brought to the area by the introduction of slavery during sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Many of the photographs by Jay Maisel are worthy of framing as he has garnered numerous awards for his work and Jim Metzner has earned accolades in his pioneer recording work on such venues as NPR, NSF and NBC.
