Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes had earned enthusiastic reviews and a loyal fan following on the strength of their first two albums, I Don't Want to Go Home and This Time It's for Real, but in the minds of many listeners they were still the little brother band of their friend and occasional benefactor Bruce Springsteen, and their third LP, 1978's Hearts of Stone, was an ambitious attempt by Southside and company to define themselves and step out of Springsteen's shadow. Gone were the cover tunes, the guest vocalists, and the goofy liner notes, and in their place Hearts of Stone delivered a set of tight and furiously passionate R&B influenced rock & roll tunes played by a mighty 11-piece band featuring one of the strongest horn sections in rock. While Springsteen wrote two songs for this album -- "Talk to Me" and the heart-tugging title cut -- this album really belongs to Southside Johnny Lyon, who rarely if ever sang with the force, emotional impact, and shades of detail he brought to these sessions, and Steve Van Zandt, who wrote the bulk of the songs, produced and arranged the album, and lends a superb guitar solo to "Hearts of Stone." In some respects, Hearts of Stone sounds like a dry run for what Van Zandt would later achieve with his band Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul on their debut album, Men Without Women, but as good a frontman as Van Zandt may be, Lyon's vocal skills are noticeably stronger, and he never had a better showcase for his talents than he did with this edition of the Asbury Jukes (especially with Max Weinberg guesting on drums and the whole band playing at the top of their form). Hearts of Stone would mark the last collaboration between Southside Johnny and Steve Van Zandt before 1991's reunion Better Days, and they inarguably parted ways on a high note.

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(c)          White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 40:1.

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has some small writing on its back side (a  filing code written in one corner; date stamp written in another; some annotation written in small letters on the promo timing strip)

-       The cover has a large radio station WABC (American Broadcasting Corp., the radio arm of ABC Records) stamps: visible ONLY on the promo timing strip.

-       Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-       Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seam

-       Minor shelf wear noted on the spine (nothing significant)

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine and the bottom seam (nothing significant)

-       Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)
