ince I apparently have nothing better to think about, I like to think of Spaceslug as Slugdge's stoned little brother. While Slugdge pumps iron and soups up his weapons for his next gladiator bout in the intergalactic slug colosseum, Spaceslug rolls a fat one in his parent's basement while reruns of Slugbob Squarepants play on the TV. Needless to say, if you enjoy lighting up, it would be advised to do so before listening to Lemanis. While firmly rooted in the stoner/doom style, these Polish psychonauts do some heavy dabbling in psychedelic and space rock territory.
For the stoner/doom side of their sound, this could best be described as debut EP era Egypt channeling the meditative grooves of Om. While the heavy parts are definitively led by big ol' stoner grooves, the bass is very high in the mix and occasionally leads the way. Much of the riffs are what you'd expect from the stoner camp, but who cares? They're goddamn great at them, and this is coming from someone who often finds stoner metal quite boring. Remember that Buried Sleeper band that were actually kind of lame but got pretty big for a while because stoner metal fans have no standards? Some of this sounds like what they wanted to be but couldn't pull off.
However, what I really find interesting is the band's psychedelic side. If this was just stoner metal it would certainly be a passable album a step ahead of their peers. But it sure as hell wouldn't be a standout one. They draw from a wide variety of psychedelic and space rock bands such as Ufesas (especially in the vocals), Blaak Heat (Shujaa), Samsara Blues Experiment and Farflung. The wandering psychedelia creates a rich otherworldly atmosphere that is completely worthy of the bands interstellar ambitions. The tonal quality is essentially god-tier and is a huge part of what makes these psychedelic passages so delicious. The drum tone is especially orgasmic. They've done a perfect job with the tone, and the cymbal sound is just so insanely rich and organic sounding that I often find myself following the drums even more than the guitars.
Honestly, with a name like Spaceslug I was expecting this to be half-baked dime a dozen goofy stoner metal. Lemanis left me pleasantly surprised. Large swaths of wandering psychedelia, laid back vocals inviting you to get lost in the lingering mushroom cloud of weed smoke, big fat stoner grooves - this is through and through a successful psychedelic stoner doom album. I find that psychedelia often plays a backup role to spice things up a little with these sort of bands. Naam's debut is my favourite psychedelic stoner/doom album and a big part of this is that it was just as much a psychedelic rock album as it was a doom album. This is more or less the case here, and I'm glad they didn't half-ass the psych rock stuff. In a genre that often produces music as lame as the burnouts who make them, this is a great little gem.
