LA singer-bassist Josh Haden debuted Spain with The Blue Moods Of Spain, his 1995 first: a slowcore-leaning set recorded at Brilliant Studios, SF in February of that year. That original release set the band's moody palette: easygoing vocals, long-and-drawn-out basslines, delicate strings; 'Untitled #1' and 'World Of Blue' especially seem to work in such long-faced sonic wavelengths, bathing every element in tones from navy blue to azure. Early line-up contributions came from Ken Boudakian, Merlo Podlewski and Evan Hartzell, while Petra and Tanya Haden add violin, vocals and cello. Notably, 'Spiritual' went on to be recorded by Johnny Cash for American II: Unchained, boosting the song's profile beyond indie circles.
