Spann

" Rough Cuts "

* Very rarely seen on eBay (or elsewhere) *

Blues Light Records  CCl 33-125,  1979 Private pressing (U.S.) Stereo

** An stunningly superb copy of this impossibly rare, privately released gem **

This obscure Montreal stoner blues-rock-psych power trio was formed by Ray Jalbert (guitar, vocals, all compositions),  Paul Henry (bass) and drummer Ronald Veronneau (replaced by Al Paterson after the 1st LP).

The trio were busy recording in 1979.....they put down the tracks for this, their debut "Rough Cuts", and their follow-up " Treat It Right" only a few months later.....both privately released on the tiny American Blues Light ticket.     In July of the same year,  they headed off to Memphis where they recorded their third (and last), "Let The Hell Hang" at Sam Phillips' legendary studio.

The band's name is an obvious homage to Otis Spann, which makes it quite clear what we find on these three albums.......BLUES ! .......a whole lot of original smokin' blues that cross between down-to-the-bone rough-throated early ZZ Top & Stones, some absolutely killer slide, and tough heavy blues-rock à la fellow-Canadians McKenna Mendelson Mainline, with dabbles of Blue Cheer power-trio psychedelics.

..... Wow !    Not a bad track anywhere ......

Quebec was just coming off it's golden age of Prog in the late 70's, and clearly it was not a hot bed for the blues at the time.    Spann was essentially playing the bar-circuit (mostly in East-End Montreal), they had no record distribution contract, they had self-financed their recordings and releases, and unsurprisingly their first 2 LP's barely sold in the hundreds (their last saw a limited-run pressing of 500 LPs).     Needless to say, all 3 albums (particularly the 1st two), are near-impossible to find today !
