Background -
- This is a Speakers Corner LP TEST PRESSING!
- It comes in a plain jacket with no artwork.
- It has NEVER BEEN PLAYED, in mint condition.
- Inside the jacket there is an insert with information about the LP.
- The record labels are WHITE with "ONLY FOR PROMOTION" written on them.
- The dead wax around the record labels has the correct stamper information for this issue.
- Please note that the picture we have included with this listing is of a generic white jacket test pressing title. The actual item for sale is in a BLACK jacket.
The cover was designed by George Hunter and painted by Kent Hollister based on the cover of a housekeeping magazine from around 1900. The cover used an old version of the Columbia logo that George Hunter felt fit with the feel of the rest of the cover. The album cover is number 24 on Rolling Stone's list of 100 greatest album covers.
The group's signature song "White Bird" was inspired by the experiences David and Linda LaFlamme had while living in Seattle, Washington. For a few weeks in December 1967 the group members lived in the attic of an old house while playing and rehearsing at a Seattle venue originally known as The Encore Ballroom. The band's manager Matthew Katz had recently assumed control over the club and renamed it "San Francisco Sound". In an ironic twist on the band's name, the song was partly inspired by Seattle's rainy winter weather. In a later interview David LaFlamme said, "Where the 'white bird' thing came from ... We were like caged birds in that attic. We had no money, no transportation, the weather was miserable. We were just barely getting by on a very small food allowance provided to us. It was quite an experience, but it was very creative in a way."
Did he or didn’t he? – "Of course he did!" maintain the most faithful It’s A Beautiful Day fans with utter conviction. They are quite sure that the master of the Hammond organ, Jon Lord, was guilty of having 'stolen' the theme tune of the spicy Indian-sounding "Bombay Calling", when composing his Deep Purple hit "Child In Time". Lord however shrugged the criticism off and in typically British fashion made no secret of the fact that he was a great fan of the group. And with good reason. Because this group, with its trivial name, turned upside down the normal balance of instruments used in hippy-style music. Not the usual guitar but a violin was used as a solo instrument, hushed yet poignant organ sounds were employed to produce shadowy effects, and the ears were bombarded with distorted amplified notes as in "Wasted Union Blues".
But right at the centre of the sound were the brilliant violin playing and wonderfully harmonizing vocal duo with its feather-light rhythmic parts, which bask in the light of the Flower Power movement. Peaceful, yet with a clear militant quintessence to indicate the group’s otherness, this LP is an authentic testimonial to musical social history during the wild Sixties.
