Description

SPIRIT OF JOHN MORGAN  Age Machine – very rare Carnaby label 1970 UK LP

Carnaby CNLS 6007, 1970 UK issue; matrix numbers CNLS 6007A-1*G, CNLS 6007B-1*G; textured gatefold sleeve.

North Devon pianist and keyboard player John Morgan made two LPs with his band for the Carnaby label. This is the second of the two, featuring eight original compositions and two covers (of songs by Richie Havens and John Stewart).

Cover  G  A textured gatefold sleeve which still puts on a brave face after nearly 50 years. The texturing has helped the panels withstand some but not all wear, giving a slightly patchy appearance, with a distinct ring mark on the rear; a name is written along an inch and a half of the front, top right border. Inside, the textured surface shows similar wear and the spine area is creased, with some foxing. The spine and edges are very worn, though most of the spine print is intact and legible; the rear section top edge is also split along its length.

Original poly-lined inner sleeve, some tanning and creasing, one tear at the centre of the rear side.

Vinyl  VG/VG-  Solid vinyl, looks good in daylight but inspection shows smears, surface marks and mild scratches. Some faint spindle marking on otherwise excellent labels.

Both sides start with a minute or so of crackle, clicks or other noise but improve thereafter with mostly light crackle at the end of tracks across into the intro of the next (or run-out). Some underlying light crackle detectable elsewhere with a further few light clicks (and a pop on side1 track 5); overall, side 2 slightly better than side 1.
