Posting to Russia: Yes, I do post to Russia. But delivery can take up to 4 to 6 weeks from the UK. So please be patient. I will submit a tracking number to the winning bidder, and when the packet arrives there it can be followed online using the Russian post website.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with hardly any spindle traces. Another record purchased from new by one owner who put is usual ‘P’ initial on his early albums in fine, very neat pen. Here seen to the left of the hole at the 6 o’clock position.

Brief Info: The fourth Spirit album that many regard as their very best. Originating from America’s West Coast, they included the immense talent of guitarist Randy California and played psychedelic rock. Now recording for Epic, it was produced by David Briggs famed for his work with Neil Young. A highly regarded psych-rock album, but it proved less successful in terms of early sales in their native America, but sold steadily over time as its reputation grew. It failed to even chart in the UK, thus originals are not so easily found. This a lovely example appearing hardly played, purchased from new by one owner. .

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably better. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, fairly smooth surfaces. This original has the single thickness front card and record storage is via the centre into the back. Printed and made in England by Shorewood with ‘Patents Pending’ text. The promotional ‘HEAVY ON CBS’ inner sleeve is included.

Cover Front: Notoriously prone to wear and especially grubbiness with quite a lot of white on unprotected surfaces. The unforgiving single thickness front has only light traces which is probably set-off from other stored covers. Just one fine crease to the bottom right corner which is commendable for such a delicate front. The superb psych graphic of the band is pristine, and this surface has no sticker issues. Just enough to politely remind of its considerable age, but it will prove difficult to find much better.

Cover Back: Mild, very narrow darkening on the right fold, but this back is very impressive with even less traces of any set-off or grubbiness. No ring wear and hardly creased at all. A tiny surface scuff trace near the bottom right hardly registers on a white surface.

Cover Inner Gatefold: In contrast to the white outside faces, this inside is very dark indeed and includes more superby psych graphics. Any rubbing or hint of wear very light indeed. The inside fold area storage part is immaculate with nothing to fault at all, reiterating the record has not been removed or inserted many times at all. This area so often gets torn and damaged by more or careless usage which here has has been totally avoided.

Top Edges: Both very straight, flat and flush, the fold gently darkened, but unworn apart. Even the front single card is crisp and very neat indeed.

Bottom Edges: Almost the same, a hint of thickening to the front being somewhat critical.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Slight thickening to the front only, the folded back barely worn.

Spine and Text: Single thickness card on any spine will rarely avoid mild tilt as the barest minimum. Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn, any discolouration to the white surface light as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs or creasing tiny and light, very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this classic, but unforgiving early 1970’s cover, one that could prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: some age darkening which is seldom avoided. This CBS (Epic records part of CBS) promotional inner has little creasing and all edges strongly intact with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface traces minuscule and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb psych-rock classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, a generally clean and heavyweight pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this elusive first issue UK pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album, my first original copy of this for ages. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
