In 1974, the good folks at Epic Records compiled an amazing overview of Spirit's most memorable and fan driven favorites simply titled The Best Of Spirit. This collection featured the brilliant and sorely missed vocals and guitar work of Randy California, the rockin' lead vocals of Jay Ferguson, the driving bass and vocals of Mark Andes, the powerful drums of the late great Ed Cassidy, plus the keyboard wizardry of the late John Locke.

This mammoth collection had something for everybody as it culled tracks not only from the four superior albums on Ode and Epic Records, but it also included the rare hit 45 single 1984. Therefore, a good majority of the hits and definitive Spirit tracks are included on this career compendium of songs which will forever stand the test of time.

Their most familiar songs from The Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus and The Family That Plays Together are featured with tracks like Nature's Way, I Got A Line On You, Morning Will Come and Animal Zoo. Plus even more Spirit classics are included like Fresh Garbage, Uncle Jack and Dark Eyed Woman.

 Spirit was formed with the intention to combine jazz, rock, classical, and folk with a mystical orientation. Led by the family duo of Hendrix-inspired guitarist Randy California and his uncle, jazz drummer Ed Cassidy (whose shaved head--some 20 years ahead of its time--was the band's visual focus), Spirit had a few idiosyncratic hits such as "I Got A Line On You." The band didn't reach its prime until Twelve Dreams, after which they promptly broke up. A loosely constructed sci-fi concept album, it contains the band's biggest hit, the ecological "Nature's Way" (complete with booming kettle drums), the surreal rock of "Animal Zoo," and the orchestral psychedelia of "Life Has Just Begun." Bristling with ideas, energy, and California's meaty guitar, Twelve Dreams exemplifies the best of the late '60s experimentalism.

Randy Wolfe, better known as Randy California, was a founding member of psychedelic 1960s rockers Spirit. As a teenager he played guitar in Jimi Hendrix's band, Jimmy James and the Blue Flames. Hendrix himself gave Randy the stage name to differentiate him from band mate Randy Palmer. 15-year-old California left the Blue Flames when they embarked on a European tour and his parents refused to let him go.

Released in 1972, Kapt. Kopter and the (Fabulous) Twirly Birds is California's first solo record. Heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix, this album is dense and way ahead of its time.

This set draws heavily from the four albums released by the original line-up on Ode/Epic. It also includes some outtakes and versions of songs from then unreleased soundtrack work. At the time that this set was released, Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus was the only studio album by the original group still in print.

Several of the outtakes were later included on the 1996 reissues of the first four albums. The remixes of the tracks on The Family That Plays Together (necessitated because the master mix was lost shortly after the album's release) are different from the 1996 re-release.
