MATRIX NO. A-2U / B-1U

This is a super rare original UK pressing of a classic early 70s UK folk psych album, with femme vocals. Includes the original inner sleeve with lyrics. The vinyl disc is in absolutely excellent condition. Plays superbly. A really nice copy!!

Impossibly rare early 70s UK acid-folk progressive monster by the legendary British band Spirogyra.

On offer here, from my own collection, is an original 1971 UK 1st pressing, on the Black & Green B&C (Charisma) label, complete with the rare lyric inner sleeve! This fabulous acid-folk-prog rock lp hardly ever turns up for sale these days as an original UK 1st pressing!

Spirogyra's debut lp is one of the essential albums and is a landmark in the UK acid folk genre, comparable to Comus' First Utterance. St. Radigunds has the capability to capture its listener's attention on both an intellectual and emotional level, using acid folk influences to help craft an album many consider a folk-prog masterpiece! A superb original pressing.

CONDITION

Vinyl: EX

(Thick heavy vinyl retains its full gloss and shine, having only some very faint wispy hairlines seen under a bright light. This LP has been played very carefully in the near 40 years I have owned it. The vinyl is in really excellent condition and plays beautifully with fabulous warm sound clarity throughout. A lovely original 1st pressing of this incredibly rare UK 70s acid-folk prog lp)

Labels: EX

(Both labels are very clean with a couple of very faint spindle traces)

Inner Lyric Sleeve: VG+ near EX

(Near excellent condition with a few light creases and a tiny 5mm split on the bottom edge)

LP Sleeve: VG+ near EX

(The original 'E.J.Day Group' non-laminated sleeve has some light storage ringwear and light rubbing which seems to be normal for this fragile matt cover. The spine is solid and arrow straight, perfectly legible and clear. The front and back of the sleeve have a few light creases near the edges and there is one very tiny sticker tear scuff on the front near the bottom edge. Overall the sleeve is in near excellent condition and is frankly one of the best examples I have seen on account of its non laminated matt finish)

Cat.No. CAS 1042

Matrix No's: A-2U & B-1U

On offer here, from my own collection, is the extremely rare original SPIROGYRA 1st pressing vinyl LP titled "ST.RADIGUNDS" released in 1971 on the UK Black & Green B&C (Charisma) label.

Spirogyra's "St.Radigunds" was issued in the UK in 1971 on B&C (Charisma) CAS 1042. This is the 1st and only original UK pressing of this magnificent acid-folk-prog psych album.

Spirogyra's first album "St.Radigunds" is the closest thing that comes to Comus's "First Utterances". It actually pre-dates it by a few weeks! Please note that Dave Mattacks will drum on al three albums but will never be a member! He was busy in Fairport Convention at the time and will also drum for Jethro Tull during the 80's. Barbara Gaskin is also known for her work with Hatfield And The North (as one of the Northettes along with Amanda Parsons) and her work with National Health and in the 80's with Dave Stewart and Bill Bruford!

What we have here is magnificent acid-folk / prog rock , avoiding some of the clichés (no done-to-death covers of traditional tunes), inventive enough to be classified as folk-prog. The main writer Martin Cockerham is also often engaging in great duos with Gaskin and this is, along with the violin of Julian Cussack and Steve Borrill's great bass lines, the main reasons for sounding so close to Comus! But where Comus were dark and demonic, Spirogyra is more political and romantic.

Many tracks are stupendous as they work very tightly and have great interplaying. Future, Island and Magical Mary are all very enthralling tracks. Cogwheels is absolutely fascinating with Gaskin underlining Cockerham's acidic vocals (much the same way Grace Slick , Balin and Kantner did in Jefferson Airplane). Time Will Tell shows how politically conscious the band was. They saved the best track to close the album. The 8 minute plus "Duke of Beaufoot" is simply riveting and really holds your attention much the same way that Traffic did with John Barleycorn Must Die. It's an intense track that ends the album perfectly and brings together the elements that contribute to making this album a masterpiece; the stunning duo of Martin and Barbara, Julian's soaring violin solos, and Steve's bass keeping a wonderful sense of rhythm.

I simply cannot recommend this album enough if you are into intricate psychedelic acid- folk rock with progressive ambiances. The whole album is totally wonderful, a beautiful record indeed, justly regarded by many as one of the truly seminal early 70s acid-folk-progressive rock albums.
