THE SPOILS OF WAR – The Spoils Of War. Wah Wah Records LPS 138. Spanish release. NEW UNPLAYED VINYL RECORDS 2-LP + 7” EP SET. This edition first issued in 2015 and repressed in a limited edition of 500 copies in April of 2020 (and nearly gone again). This double LP comes in a laminated gatefold gimmick cover with inner pop-up and includes a bonus 7" EP, with picture sleeve replicating the front gatefold cover are (issued in 1969, their first of two EPs), a Spoils Of War sticker (pictured near top center of the front cover), and an insert with liner notes courtsey of leader Jim Cuomo himself and Klemen Breznikar of the Psychedelicbaby blogspot along with full color photos. The package comes in a clear mylar Wah Wah logo printed outer resealable sleeve with hype sticker, as shipped by the label. This item will ship with the discs outside of the jacket.

DESCRIPTION:

The Spoils Of War led by Jim Cuomo made some of the most inspiring but strange music from the '60s, in the same awe-inspiring vein as early Mothers Of Invention with similarities to the electronic explorations of 50-Foot Hose and The United States Of America. This is music with a hearty intellectual background, combined with well-crafted and well-performed music in the key of Zappa. Other influences might indicate early Soft Machine, Slap Happy, Henry Cow and Faust. For open-minded listeners, The Spoils Of War are a must:  experiments with electronic sounds, compositions and performances of beautiful harmonies and songs, and all circa 1967/69. How in the world could he make music like this so early? Well, it must have been the inspiring influence of Jim Cuomo's musical teacher John Cage. Prior to forming Spoils Of War Jim had already served with instro-rockers The Cool Notes in Texas, along with future Big Brother & The Holding Co. founder and guitarist Sam Houston Andrew III when he moved to the University of Illinois to obtain his Masters Degree in Music. It was in Illinois where The Spoils Of War were born in 1967, named after a musical instrument invented by Harry Partch - it's name coming from the fact it had actually been built from spent artillery shells. Alongside Jim, other members included Al Ierardi on guitar, Roger Francisco on bass (and later local engineer and producer), Frank Garvey on drums, and James Stround on live sound manipulation. Annie Hat would soon join on vocals; Charlie Braugham played drums on the later gigs. Excited computer generated sounds mix into a cool psychedelic rock background. It is one of the early pioneering experiments of electronic music and drones in a rock band setting, made at a time when programming computer sounds was really an adventure, since electronic music was still a burgeoning phenomenon. The box that had been opened by the likes of Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio a.o. left a lot of things for Cuomo and his peers to explore - and they were not afraid of doing so! The music in this 2-LP +7”EP set was compiled with the cooperation of Jim Cuomo comprising their studio works, including previously unreleased recordings, and some later work by Cuomo and Co. Even today the music of The Spoils Of War goes far beyond most other modern pop music and will remain inspiring many years from now. Jim’s next venture was the formation of the band Mormos, that issued two albums in the early 70s (also usually available in my listings). Highly recommended!

SIDE BAR:

From other research I’ve done on the Champaign-Urbana music scene (I lived there for some 15 years and traveled there for the music regularly some 6 years prior to moving there; 74-95), I found out that Lothar & The Hand People spent some time in Champaign-Urbana during the same time period this band existed, so it is likely that they met and ideas and technologies were exchanged. I don’t know when or how the Theremin was added to Lothar’s music, but this was about the point at which Lothar became a Theremin.

All LPs are removed from their jackets and placed outside of the jacket for shipping. If an album comes sealed (and will be noted as such in the above description), it will be shipped whole unless you request that I open it up to place the disc outside of the jacket for shipping. Both jacket and disc are placed inside of an outer plastic sleeve before packing for shipping. I use professional corrugated record mailers.
