Label/Format: Island – original orange eyeball format with deep inner ridge and heavily textured matt surfaces.

Label Conditions & Overview: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive with spindle marks around moderate and showing little on these hard rough surfaces, there is no wear around the hole area. Gorgeous real pastel pink colour with no grubbiness or abrasions, the spindle alignments are only really seen under angled light. Have no fears on sound quality – it is superb and plays nigh-on perfectly with all the fidelity and detail you would expect and desire from a first issue. Both playing surfaces clean with any minor surface marks few, fine and light – there are NO penetrating scratches and sound quality is very impressive for all. The cover also very fine, but a little ageing on the spine and rubbing on the edges, but still for a near 45-year-old cover, highly respectable, and an E. J. Day original. Later ones, although very similar, were printed by Robor.

Brief Info: With a clue in the title, this was Spooky Tooth’s second album. Regarded by many as their best ever including myself, ‘Two’ is a heavy blues-rock album with elements of prog. A band that changed their line-up frequently, this early incarnation was also regarded as their finest. First-pressed copies of this one are hard to find, and this actual record is a beauty. Heavily pressed with gorgeous labels, clean playing surfaces and sound, any surface marks or blemishes few and faint. The ultimate detail first pressing will not be beaten for sound and arguably it is still one of the lesser-lauded Island early classics.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with the more greenish tinged artwork on the front and back. Matt and smooth finished, printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day.

Cover Front: Some fairly gentle age toning around the edges, but any real wear is minimal with any gentle surface marks only really seen with angle viewing. A little corner tip rubbing, but no sticker tears or marks and the lack of creasing always a major plus. This vintage ‘Day’ cover front remains attractive with just enough to remind of it’s considerable age.

Cover Back: Largely the same with just a couple of small spots near the spine edge as seen in close-up, light and gentle surface marks, but no ring wear, that a major plus with such a heavy thick record inside all these years.

Cover Inner Gatefold: One tiny pull mark with any darkening only very light to the predominately pale areas. The band graphic looks lovely as seen in close-up.

Top Edges: Quite light patchy rubbing and a little darkened, both straight.

Bottom Edges: Light+ patchy rubbing on the front, the back has moderately rubbed across the full length.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, a little mild compression and a gentle tilt to right. Folded near square, so the edges meet up closely but not quite parallel, also with the mild spine tilt, the right top edge is a fraction proud of the back. Any surface rubbing light, a little near the bottom corner, elsewhere little, small and very patchy. Most of the graphic is present but darkened, there was no text on this early version.

Corners: Moderate tip rubs mostly with fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: With most of the main areas in very fine condition and only fairly lightly aged on the edges, this is still a highly respectable example of the possibly rarer green-tinged cover. Not for the highly discerning cover collector, but many will be more than happy. These unprotected gatefolds with very heavy records inside are not easy, and with that fact considered, this is a solid and still quite impressive example.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD: a heavy-duty polylined white inner that has darkened with age and I repaired a couple of tears on the window circle. Yes, I suppose I could have substituted a less aged one, but I always prefer to keep the original inner if at all possible. Still very solid with a clear and intact lining, some natural crinkle/mild creasing, all edges unsplit with no repairs needed. This is UK patented, with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine, intense black and heavy pressed in the typical early Island style. A robust deep-grooved heavyweight record that includes the ultimate clean top-detailed sound. A copy with quite modest plays on all the evidence and few blemishes on what are clean playing surfaces. A few mostly very fine and light surface marks seen under angled light that few 44-year-old records will realistically avoid. There are NO penetrating scratches or groovewear. Collectors will know the state many of these early albums are seen in, often played on less than wonderful early record players that left marks and inflicted terrible damage to the grooves. This has avoided such mistreatment and abuse and plays impressively and clean. Visually still a lovely record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful and much rarer first pressed record plays even above it’s very fine visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Not all early Island albums were, and could often prove variable, but this one failed to disappoint and was an immensely enjoyable listen. Few available copies will outperform this earliest pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played modestly and has been generally carefully handled – a few gentle surface marks over time will happen if a record is used, and that is why they were bought in the first place. The music and vocals are all precise and focused with no inherent crackle or pressing sounds and nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better as a very first issue and can be strongly recommended. I enjoyed this immensely.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
