Label/Format: Island – pink i format with smooth finish. Initial pressings of this album had a rough textured surface and a more salmon pink hue. This early ‘second’ pressing has the most stunning deep, real pink labels and both look stunning, these, in my humble opinion, are far rarer and harder to find than the very first with only a very small number made before the transition to the new pink rim format.

Label Conditions: Superb clean examples that look little handled or used and practically as clean and fresh as when made. Spindle marks are very few, light and faint – three or four each side and without any doubt, this copy has hardly been played and they show little. Two of the deepest pink Island labels I have ever seen (Please see label scan).

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 136 grams. About average for it’s era.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce, and as stated, I truly believe these deep pink, smooth-finish examples are rarer than the rough textured ones. Only a tiny run of these would have been pressed as the pink rim format was only a few months away.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This is classic Spooky Tooth and I regard this as one of the more difficult titles on Island to find in fine conditions. A ‘progressive’ set with a fair degree of heaviness, it includes their classic version of ‘I am the Walrus’ which is worth any price alone – it even better than The Beatles version for me – a bold statement, sure, but this is an awesome version. A band who never really gained any degree of superstardom probably due to the fact they rarely kept a stable line-up for any length of time, also not helped by a very experimental third album that would have scared many listeners off. This is a superb pink label pressing, and thus far, the best one I have yet. The record does have a scuff mark on ‘Son of My Father’, but it totally superficial and non-sounding and the record offers superb clean sound throughout. With thin card for the cover, this is more often seen with considerable rubbing and ringwear. Although this has a little creasing, it remains clean and attractive and devoid of the aforementioned issues. So, for the Island and Spooky Tooth collector, a more unusual pink label copy and one I feel sure that will please the majority needing it.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: (but looks better and conservatively graded). A single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by MacNeill.

Cover Front: Both sides are seldom seen devoid of ringwear and grubbiness, this front has practically none. This being clean and attractive looking with fine colour and fine freshness. The only issue is a little, mainly fine creasing near the top corner areas. Very modest visibility with normal viewing but more seen under light. Very faint record impression, but on such thin card, this will rarely be avoided to some degree, most will show far more than here.

Cover Back: Very impressive, clean and attractive. Any rub traces are very light indeed and the lack of ringwear is unusually good news. A light crease towards the bottom right corner, it shows little.

Top Edge: Faint rub traces only.

Bottom Edge: Fairly light rubbing, being a pale coloured edge, this has very modest visibility and impact.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with virtually no wear and is guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Quite solid but very thin, mainly straight with a little light compression in places. All text is perfect and unworn, the ends gently tapered in manufacture, any rubbing on these areas, but only quite light.

Corners: Corner rubbing is mainly light and again has modest visibility, all retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: An attractive all-round example of this fragile wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. Even with a little creasing, it is still one of the best I have seen, certainly for some time. Indeed, I have not offered a copy of this album for around five years – I have seen a few, but none have been up to the standard I want to offer. This strong item should please many collectors, if not quite the perfectionists.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD(++): a Polydor style lined inner that is date-coded 1/0570. Fairly mildly aged with minor discolour, a corner crease and a smallish tear on one window circle (that I have repaired as neatly as possible). This apart, the circles are both neat and the lining very clear indeed. Some discolouration to the seams but these all intact with no repairs required here. Of course, I could have swapped this for a better Polydor inner, but I much prefer to stick to my policy of offering the inner that came with the album if at all possible, even with some wear.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: this being quite cautious but correct with one scuff on side two as mentioned above. This is totally superficial with NO sound whatsoever. Under light, some ultra fine and faint surface marks – whispy traces only – are just visible too. Still a very impressive visual copy overall and with sound to match. Clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. Immediately striking are those incredibly deep pink labels that do come close to reminind of new – this a great indication of few plays – but never entirely definitive of course. But I am totally convinced this record has had very little use at all, reitterated by quality clean soun d. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This somewhat lesser-lauded Island classic plays even above it’s visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal to none and no pops or clicks were noted, few copies will play better than this. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and looked after, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this vintage Island record. This copy could prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits strong recommendation.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
