Impossible to pigeonhole, to the extent that their fanbase occasionally seem privy to some secret that has eluded the rest of the world, Spoon are now nine albums into a career that maintains the power to confront and confound whilst essentially delivering what is merely an inventive and artistic take on indie rock, driven by the songwriting and arresting voice of Britt Daniel. 'Hot Thoughts' is their most confident and adventurous effort to date, replete with catchy hooks, intriguing production trickery and electronic texture alike. Anyone who ever wished that Modest Mouse would grow a bit of backbone or that dEUS would cheer up a bit will find much to appreciate here.
