Organist Spooner Oldham was an integral part of the Memphis/Muscle Shoals studio bands of the late '60s. He contributed the ghostly organ sound on Percy Sledge's runaway hit "When a Man Loves a Woman," and became a member of Rick Hall's ace FAME studios band alongside guitarist Jimmy Johnson, bassist Junior Lowe and drummer Roger Hawkins. Together the unit played on landmark albums by Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin among others. His songwriting talents are legendary, and his work with Dan Penn in Memphis made hits for artists like Aretha Franklin (“Do Right Woman”) and the Box Tops (“Cry Like a Baby”).

He’s played alongside Neil Young and Bob Dylan in more recent years, and is an active producer.

From spooneroldham.com Spooner Oldham, along with Dan Penn and Duane Allman, helped create the rock-solid rhythms and passionate performances of the “Muscle Shoals Sound” emanating from the northwest corner of the state of Alabama where he was born and raised. A grittier, funkier version of Southern soul, their sound was also called “deep soul” and it revolutionized rhythm and blues in the 1960’s.
