REVIEW - Being born in '62, I was but a toddler when this was released. It took a lot of convincing and begging, but I was able to talk my mom into buying me a copy of the LP while we were shopping in a Sears, probably in '67. None of that really has anything to do with the review. This is a great album, every song on it is worth the price of the album. I'm sure it has to do with my early childhood memories and imagination while listening to this album...but each of the songs have such deep meaning. They are true patriotic types to just conveying feelings that were in most every man's head and thoughts during the Vietnam years. I find it a shame that the American society didn't treat these men of honor with the respect they were due...no matter one's personal thoughts about the situation. "The Ballad Of The Green Beret" speaks for itself, it is an awesome song. "I'm A Lucky One" is about a soldier who is about to be shipped back Stateside. A laid back happy beat and rhythm...but, it brings up memories of things that were not so pleasent. "Letter From Vietnam" a heartfelt letter from a tired and worn out soldier who's missing his life back home. "Badge Of Courage" is a somber setting in which Saddler tries to Xplain just what the Badge of Courage is and means. Kind of a sad, but proud feel. "Saigon" has a slightly ethnic vibe in the music. Kind of a universal social statement about the youth...Saigon, I'll be back again... "Salute To The Nurses" interesting back beat with a very militaristic horn sounding. The words are very apropos. "I'm Watching The Raindrops Fall" this is just a pretty sad tear jerker type from the era. Not sure why it wasn't released as a single. "Garet Trooper" this one is just a cute poke at those who found a way to stay safe in the back, while boasting of all their heroics...you know there were some of those guys too. When I was a kid I really thought this was a funny story. "The Soldier Has Come Home" another pretty sad tear jerker for a soldier who has met his fate. "Lullaby" another pretty slow styled song...a lullaby. Having been a little guy when I heard this first, it left an impression on me to always to be her big helper...kind of funny how little things like that stick with you over the years. "Trooper's Lament" sad story about a paratrooper who's chute did not open. "Bamiba" cute story of a night on the town going a little wrong and the consequences. "The A Team" this is a bonus track that was not included on the original LP release. It doesn't have the special place in my heart as all the others do, but it is not a bad song. I'm sure this is not a album that many would have in a regular rotation in their sterio, but it is good and enjoyable. I would highly recommend it for anyone who has just joined or graduated boot camp, no matter which branch.
