Description
Here's a legendary record, from a 1931 session fronted by King Oliver's nephew, DAVE NELSON & HIS HARLEM HOT SHOTS. Most of the personnel is from Oliver's band, which was sparsely recorded at the time, making this an important "associated" document. They play jazz classics "ST. LOUIS BLUES" and "I AIN'T GOT NOBODY."
BUSTER BAILEY (clarinet) and WILBUR DE PARIS (trombone) are prominent, as is bassist SIMON MARERRO, who actually solos on "St. Louis Blues" - an outstanding side. DAVE NELSON himself is front and center, on trumpet and vocals.
An avid eBayer informs me that DANNY BARKER also is present on guitar, for his first recording session! I heard him playing live at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival in 1991 - sixty years after this record - and he hadn't lost a thing!
This rare, original 1931 Electradisk 1931 (yes, the year and the catalogue number are the same!) is in somewhat compromised V condition - closer to V+ on "I Ain't Got Nobody." Moderate wear. Looks like someone left their hot coffee cup on the "St. Louis" side, leaving a kind of "crop circle" on the surface. This actually adds only slight noise to the side.
