STAN GETZ QUARTET - COLLATES

A rare & sought after copy of this 1955 UK 1st press jazz classic on the ESQUIRE record label, MICROGROOVE 32-011 (PRLP 7002)

The dead wax matrix numbers are :

Side 1  PRLP - 7002 - A with stampers "B" and "RVG"  at 3.30 o'clock and 8.30 o'clock respectively

Side 2  PRLP - 7029 - B with stampers "B" and "RVG" at 9 o'clock and 8 o'clock respectively

Note the "RVG" hand etches on each dead wax area - unique to 1st pressings and referring to Rudy Van Gelder, the legendary recording engineer who helped to define the sound of jazz in this era - later pressings did not have these etchings.

The appearance of the vinyl is excellent+. This is heavy duty, completely flat vinyl and still retaining it's original glossy and jet black lacquered sheen. In normal daylight the appearance of the vinyl comes across as near perfect and it is only under a bright light that a few very fine, small wispy hairlines and a few paper scuffs come into view. These minor blemishes appear to be superficial and surface only with nothing at all "feelable", and do little to detract from the impressive appearance and overall impressive audio quality. This is most certainly a record that has had fewer than it's expected number of plays and remains in overall excellent condition - remarkable considering it's 63 year old antiquity!

The labels are excellent. All of the black and maroon text, and the beige matt background, remain beautifully intact, with just a few very faint spindle trails adjacent to the centre hole on each label and some very minor handling marks - all very minor. 

The front and back laminated, top and bottom flipback West Brothers outer sleeve is GOOD PLUS (G+). I'll get straight to the point - the condition of this outer sleeve would be VG+ (at least) were it not for a 12cm part of the spine which has been shredded and looks a bit of a mess (see photos). This is a real shame because the top and bottom edges are excellent, without any scuffing, the corners remain nicely defined right angles with just some minor rubbing on the opening side corners, the top and bottom flipbacks on the reverse side are excellent, there is no unwanted writing or doodles and, apart from some minor laminate lifting on the front side adjacent to the spine split, the front and back lamination is in excellent shape. In fact the only other blemish is some minor laminate creasing on both the front and reverse side located at the top right hand corner.

Finally, the overall quality of the audio is EXCELLENT. Actually, for much of this record the audio quality is superb. There is wonderful tone and clarity throughout and with no distortion, even on the higher frequencies and at higher volume. No skips or clicks and just some occasional, very light background crackle - very minimal and only really noticeable at the beginning of each side : I can only put this down to dust in the grooves through decades of storage because the condition of the vinyl is undoubtedly excellent, and I am sure that a professional clean would remedy. Each track makes for a great listen - these are 1949 and 1950 recordings featuring a young Stan Getz doing what he does best on tenor sax and accompanied by other jazz luminaries such as Al Haig (piano), Tommy Potter (bass), Roy Haynes (drums) on side 1, and Tony Aless (piano), Percy Heath (bass), and Don Lamond (drums) on side 2. Wonderful!

Comes with poly lined "USE EMITEX" and "MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN" inner sleeve with a 5cm split in the middle of the right edge and with a little age discolouration but otherwise in very good vondition and still fully functional. Note that I always post the record in a new plain white inner sleeve in order to protect the original.

In summary a nice and sought after copy of this 1955 UK 1st pressing jazz classic, with the excellent condition vinyl and impressive audio quality being the high points - a "must have" for any serious jazz vinyl collection and only continuing to gain in value.

Mint

The records itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items, such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent

The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and /or creasing.

Very Good

The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good

The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

Fair

The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents are torn, stained and/or defaced

Poor

The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents are badly damaged or partly missing.

Bad

The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler
