This auction is for an extremely rare six LP boxed set, Stan Kenton: The Complete Capitol Recordings of the Holman and Russo Charts. Features tracks recorded from 1950 to 1963.
"There have been few jazz musicians as consistently controversial as Stan Kenton. Dismissed by purists of various genres while loved by many others, Kenton ranks up there with Chet Baker and Sun Ra as jazz's top cult figure. He led a succession of highly original bands that often emphasized emotion, power, and advanced harmonies over swing, and this upset listeners who felt that all big bands should aim to sound like Count Basie. Kenton always had a different vision."
Released on Mosaic Records MR6-136, in 1991, in limited edition. Only 7500 copies were pressed, this set is hand numbered number 6147. The LP's come in a box which includes an 36 page booklet that features black and white photos and text chronicling Stan Kenton, Bill Holman and Bill Russo, along with producer's notes and track lists. All six LP's, box and booklet are in NM condition. Inside of box has some light scuffing, very light creases on front bottom of booklet, only noted for complete accuracy. All vinyl is bright and glossy, impeccable condition.
This set is a must for any Stan Kenton fan. Extremely hard to find!
