With the 4 pre-released songs being worlds apart from one another, it was only logical to assume that The Weeknd's new album was going to be pretty diverse. He has certaily come a long way since his mixtapes (2010's "Trilogy" set), his first studio proper album (2013's "Kiss land"), and his sophomore (last year's ‘‘Beauty behind the madness’’). Each of those releases, led to the release of "Starboy", evidently the album set to make him a first-class pop royalty. The astonishing ‘‘Beauty behind the madness’’ was a creative upheaval that began to teleport The Weeknd from the margins right to pop's center. "Starboy", clearly created with the intention to take him to the next level, is his most pop-oriented and commercial-sounding record, so far. You cannot take away the basic elements associated with him, thus, the new record like the previous ones is dark, depressing and disturbing, yet, oh so very liberating at the same time. On his "Can't feel my face" video, Abel Tesfaye (real name) was engulfed in flames. I liked to think that it meant, apart from the obvious symbolism of burning his old self, that his music was red hot at the time. He told fans he was going to sell out. But "on his own terms". "Starboy" is another spectacular record; from the bold, poppy cover artwork to the actual songs, it oozes confidence and star quality, destined to become a success. The Weeknd's troubled past may still haunt him, but he is very much aware of what he is allowing himself to do, and talented enough in order to orchestrate so brilliantly this crucial step on his way to the pop throne.
