Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only light spindle marks with low visibility and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: NSPL 18301.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: A massive 175 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Rare: along with many other new 60s psych bands, this album had only relatively modest sales and was a non-starter in the US.

Brief Info: Status Quo’s second album, then a five-piece band and again giving no clues of their later boogie-style rock which became their trademark. Following in the footsteps of their first album Picturesque Matchstickable Messages from the Status Quo (the rare mono original also on offer from the same collection), this is again heavily influenced by psychedelia and again it failed to capture the public’s imagination. Both albums are superb and this one in stereo is a first press original. This massively-pressed copy looks and plays superbly and has a fantastically shiny, little-worn cover which was only initially printed for the mono version and having a stereo NSLP sticker. These two early psych-based albums are simply wonderful, the change of direction and style was coming soon.

Cover Grade and Format: EX++ a single fully laminated cover. Printed and made in England and is a dedicated mono sleeve with the usual stereo sticker on the back. Clearly Pye thought the mono format was still the one of choice at the back end of the 1960s.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides look fantastic with the laminate ultra shiny, fresh and clear. All is fully adhered with no lifting or blisters, any traces of fricion rubs or dulling barely even register. A few mild surface creases only but little spoils the visual impact of this wonderfully preserved cover that again came very a very discerning collection. The opening edges sees the laminate end short of full width, but the exposed strips are clean with any blemishing tiny and faint. Even under angled light, the ultra smooth surfaces have hardly any marks, even surface traces and the wood on the artwork appears highly varnished. So hard to find these vintage covers looking like this and although there is a chip on the bottom right front corner, this 41-year-old cover will prove very difficult indeed to find better.

Top Edge: Practically unworn and very straight.

Bottom Edge: A small pressure laminate split near the centre but no penetration of the card itself. That apart, little else to fault up to the corner tips that have small rubs.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering. Odd tiny burr trace viewed end-on but no trimming. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid but quite thin, mainly straight with minimal compression. All text is present and unworn with decent centering on the fine width. The laminate is solid and clear with only light scuff traces felt by the fingertip.

Corners: The spine pair are in very fine shape and have little to fault, almost the same for top right. The bottom right has a front chip to the tip area, the back is unaffected.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this elusive late 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. All made more remarkable by the fact it’s made with quite thin card. This highly attractive and glossy item should please most collectors.

The Inner: EX++ plain white, heavy duty and polylined. It it patented but has Foreign Patents pending text. The window is superbly neat with minimal dulling of the lining. Hardly any creases at all, all edges unsplit and mainly clean with barely any glue darkening on the seams. Odd tiny tone spot on one side only.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++, this is a fantastic, massively pressed record that appears to have been played little. A very fine visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black with an almost freakish mass. Even in the 1960s, few records were pressed over 170 grams and this is pretty exceptional even by Pye standards. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare vintage Quo record plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. These thick and heavy, deeper grooved Pye pressings were better equipped to ignore the perils of the older, less record-friendly equipment of the era. No damage to the grooves from vintage mono pickups and all the music and vocals are fully focused, precise and sharp and this can never be taken for granted on such records. Yes, many stereo albums were played on mono equipment often with disastrous results. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp and audio quality of the highest standard was enjoyed. A true delight to listen too and so many will have forgotten just how wonderful the early Quo titles were. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
