Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only two or three small mainly very light spindle marks. No wear around the hole area and this scarce album plays superbly.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: Brilliant debut album by this heavy blues rock band. They sound uncannily like early Jethro Tull and Blodwyn Pig and fans of those will treasure this slightly lesser lauded band from the same era. A couple of classic blues standards are included with mostly self-written material, and I regard this as a mini-classic. This is a very fine UK original – the cover – which is immensely prone to all forms of wear – has little. The record looks hardly even played and has superb, dynamic punchy sound. Even the inner sleeve is impressive. If this great album has bypassed you, strongly recommended.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: (or very close to). An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. The front is single thickness and the record enters inside the gatefold middle. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day and includes a gold stereo sticker on the back. This was also pressed briefly in mono. The CBS promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A couple of minor blemishes, but for this fragile single thickness card, this is impressive. A small pen mark near the top edge – I only noticed when scrutinising for this listing – and couple of quite fine surface creases, these hardly show with normal full-on viewing. Clean, fresh with impressive unfaded colour and no rubbing, apart from the odd corner tip. This is always a challenging one and rarely seen this nice.

Cover Back: The back is even better with little to fault bar small tip rubs. The lack of creasing and especially ringwear is great news for a cover that is very prone. The shaped gold and black ‘Stereo’ sticker is fresh and clean, just a tiny ‘pick’ trace on the left. A minuscule trace of waving being very critical, but like the front, this will prove hard to find better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The only blemish on this centrefold is a fine rub on the top right edge, little else at all and this looks very impressive overall.

Top Edges: Neat, flush with barely any wear or thickening, even to the thin front.

Bottom Edges: Faint rub traces to the fold, then as per above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Some patchy, quite light rubbing on the closed back edge, record enters from the inside. The front has been naturally protected with gentle spine tilt to left, thus this is crisp and neat and guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, but like most of these types, a little thin and understrength. Straight with barely any compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. It has a natural tilt to the left as stated above as most of these types do. The main face has little wear and all text is perfect and unworn. Most of any rubbing on the ends, but even here, only very small.

Corners: Fairly light to moderate tip rubbing with small tip creases here and there, mainly fine to very shape retained.

Cover Summary: A little wear yes, but this is another highly unforgiving central storage cover that were quite popular with CBS at this time, they are seldom seen without major wear and even damage. I consider this attractive little-worn example above average and still looking attractive on all the important areas especially. Not one seen often, this should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): with very little to fault. A vintage unlined CBS promotional inner called ‘Rock Busters, Heavy on CBS’ with hardly any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Minimal discolouration with just a little on the seam adhesive as per most. These inners date from the late 1960s into the early 1970s.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and practically Mint(–). A superb visual copy that is very clean with lovely shine and very solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence, any surface traces as seen critically under bright angled light, tiny, very few and faint – they hardly get better than this. Visually a hugely impressive record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent blues-rock album plays up to and most-all even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. As stated further up, this band sound VERY similar to early Jethro Tull and Blodwyn Pig, and I was very impressed with this scarce debut. Recorded quite loud and full-on, this has real punch and sonic delivery, it provides a real test for any system to handle. No tracking issues* or pressing noises, this is a quality rock album. Few available copies will outperform this first pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Blue moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
