Steamhammer

'Mountains'

B&C, UK, 1970

CAS 1024

SECOND OUTING from this highly respected British blues boom combo and one of the 'must have' albums of the time due not only to the musical content but also to the highly decorative cover design.

Where the debut album stuck ridgidly to a style pioneered by the blues boom 'Mountains' crosses progressive rock boundaries introducing long tracks with room to stretch out and lay down solid grooves. Its this framework that allows lead guitarist Martin Pugh to unleash a volley of stunning solos. Aided and abetted handsomely by vocalist Keiren White whose voice is reflective of the trad blues howlers but also retains a warmth that is often lost amidst such electric bluster. Best track? Surely that honour belongs to 'Riding On The L&N' recorded live at the Lyceum theatre in London. Clocking is at something in the region of 10 minutes the track twists and turns its way through a number of parts before setting the pace for Martin Pugh to launch, missile fashion, into an extended and overheated guitar solo that would shame Jimmy Page.

One of the most accomplished heavy prog albums of the era, laced with the honesty and intelligence that suggested bigger and better things ahead. Sadly their potential was never fully developed despite the fact that they ultimately became more popular in Germany than their home country.

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.

Pressing: B&C, UK, 1970

Sharp corners (a couple of micros rubs), no dings, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and no creases. Superb thick uncrushed spine.
