What we have here is one of two or three rarest Mobile Fidelity vinyl pressings in existence. Shortly after this album was issued, a licensing dispute erupted between ABC records (Steely Dan's label) and Mobile Fidelity, causing the ENTIRE press run of "Katy Lied" MFSL pressing to be withdrawn from circulation, thus making it one of the rarest MFSL titles (some of our customers claim that the only reason why the album is so brutally rare is that it sold poorly and Mobile Fidelity simply deleted it from the catalog after only a few hundreds were printed). "Katy Lied" is right up there with the MFSL test pressing of Janis Joplin's "Pearl", Beatles' "With the Beatles" and Ry Cooder's "Jazz" as the most coveted and rarest Mobile Fidelity vinyl in existence. But that's NOT all, folks - read on…
This also happens to be our candidate for the best album of the 1970's (well, let's face it: not much of a competition there): Incredible musicianship; inventive tunes; creative and evocative lyrics; innovative arrangements; danceable, rocking, funky tunes with the message and simple, elegant and contagious groove that just won't stop. It is incredible that a music of such a soulful and exuberant nature could be created by two white-bread Yanks. Fagan and Becker were George and Ira Gershwin of the late 20th Century. And then, of course, there is this gorgeous Mobile Fidelity sound that makes you feel as if you were sitting right on Donald Fagen's vocal cords as he is singing. Incredible!!! This is not sound; this is ADVENTURE in sound. Track listing: Black Friday - Bad Sneakers - Rose Darling - Daddy don't live in that New York City no more - Doctor Wu - Everyone's gone to the movies - Your gold teeth II - Chain Lightning - Any world (that I am welcome to) - Throw back the little ones (no less than half of this album wound up in various Steely Dan compilations and "best of" anthologies)
Here's what Donald Fagen had to say about Steely Dan's Katy Lied album: "Each song is seen from a different view point. Some I imagine have an idealistic tone to them, while others are someone who is obviously suicidal. Obviously the narrator...is really in the deep stages of severe depression. And of course, I probably was when I was performing them." Such is the case with the CD's lead track, "Black Friday."
The recording features two members of Toto in keyboardist David Paich and drummer Jeff Porcaro, whose blues shuffle lurches while the main character contemplates digging a hole and crawling inside because of the impending doom of the upcoming day. Slaughter is on the way and he has already made preparations for his exit, potentially going so far as to alter his identity in order to escape the possible consequences. Ready for life on the run, he plans to "collect everything" he is owed and "let the world pass by," and, pleading for the Lord not to let disaster find him, he wants an archbishop to sanctify him but has even left himself an exit in that case ("If he don't come arcross, I'm gonna let it roll").
This dynamic singalong broke the top forty in the United States and the chart placement confirms that Becker and Fagen were able to allay intergenerational superstitions (such as those symbolized by Friday the 13th) onto wax, linking all listeners together in a sociological (and, ultimately, musical) way.
(EXCERPT FROM AN ANONYMOUS ONLINE REVIEW)
The until-recently-defunct "Mobile Fidelity Labs" audiophile album vinyl pressings were not only analogue, audiophile masterpieces and connoisseur delights, they have become true pieces of audio history and lore. These majestic recordings received a meticulous and laborious treatment like no other recordings in the entire history of the recorded sound. They are characterized by the massively extended dynamic and frequency range, mastering from the very first generation of original master tapes, almost compulsive attention paid to the detail and integrity of the pressing, and the highest quality of the material (only the "virgin-", audiophile-grade vinyl was used, and most of the titles were pressed by RCA/Victor and/or Warner-Pioneer corporations of Japan, both known for their near-obsessive attention paid to the fine sonic detail and audio craftsmanship); a special proprietary technology was used to achieve analogue-like, warm, translucent, radiant, vivid and all-encompassing sound. To this day, many of these recordings remain unsurpassed, delivering music reproduction as close to the actual recording session as possible, without any loss of musical information inherent in the standard practice of mastering from the inferior "production" copies. EVER SINCE THE MOBILE FIDELITY SOUND LABS TEMPORARILY CLOSED IN DECEMBER OF 1999 (ONLY TO REOPEN IN 2003), THESE RECORDINGS HAVE BEEN ESCALATING IN VALUE AND DEMAND.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire this great album in its FINEST audio format, no longer in print, and no longer easily obtainable.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is STILL in its original inner, hi-grade MFSL PVC inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!
(c) The album comes with original MFSL cardboard inner sleeve
(d) The album comes with its original MFSL insert
(e) The record comes in a hi-grade MFSL PVC inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!
(f) The record is pressed on a beautiful, high-quality, virgin-grade vinyl, which is usually used for audiophile, extended-dynamic-range, half-speed mastered and connoisseur pressings.
(g) In addition, the record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(h) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
