Album Notes

We've been referring to this LP a lot here in the Archives and it is a definite yardstick for the late 60s guitar psych style. Despite its major label origins the sound is remarkably raw and garagey, with no compromises anywhere. Some rate it as the best major label LP all over and it sure blows a lot of mega-rarities away, as well as ALL the LA heavy psych competition from the same era, with an intense and genuinely psychedelic mood. Punky vocals, great and highly original material (especially on side 1), acid guitars that won't quit - I can't see anyone into psych not digging this. Incidentallly, none of the reissues are from mastertapes. [PL]

It's easy to explain why this is *the* best heavy psych album: It's a hard rock album that comes from a garage tradition with no blues or heavy metal influence at all. This results in two vocal styles, both of which are superior to anything else you'll hear on a 1968 hard rock record. The first, as heard on the aptly named "Welcome To The Void," is a punky, youthful snarl that suits upbeat hard rock better than any macho swagger. The second, as heard on the also aptly named "Of Dreams," is a breathy whisper that is sexual and eerie. Steve Morgen is one horny guy, and it's hard to tell whether he's more interested in hallucinating or getting laid, but both obsessions really create a kind of urgency here that is powerful and exciting. Even the obvious Who rip at the end of side one and the long jazzy guitar solo at the end of side two work in this context. And, of course, the songwriting and fuzz guitar are absolutely top of the heap. [AM]

Ultra rare but all time favorite psychedelic 60's album from USA. Led by Steven Morgen, who simply named his band Morgen. A true psychedelic artifact originally released on Probe in 1969. Comes with original artwork 'The Scream' from Edvard Munch.

This rare album from Long Island, New York, contains some superb psychedelic guitar work and powerful drumming on tracks like Of Dreams, Purple and Love. All the material was written by Steve Morgen, and he also co-produced the album with Murray Shiffrin. It's brilliant, and is worth obtaining and is now a solid collectable.

Singer/guitarist Steve Morgen and company originally hailed from Long Island, New York. Signed by ABC's short-lived Probe subsidiary, their 1969 debut Morgen teamed them with producer Murray Shiffrin. After this superb debut, the entire band quite simply disappeared. If you're into heavy psych guitar, then this is for you. While Morgen had a competent, if limited voice, he was a truly amazing guitarist with the likes of Nick Saloman of Bevis Frond becoming a staunch advocate of Morgen's status as a 'psychedelic guitar hero.' Tracks such as 'Eternity In Between,' 'Welcome To the Void,' 'Of Dreams' and 'Beggin' Your Pardon' (Miss Joan) were simply drenched with fuzz and feedback guitar. Underpinned by Maiman's powerhouse drumming (easily compared with Led Zepplin's John Bonham) and suitably trippy lyrics and you're looking at a pseudo-classic slice of psychedelia.

"ABC Record's valiant attempt at the 'hip/youth' market, Probe, released many memorable LP's by such groups as Saint Steven and The Litter along with debut offerings by Zephyr, Soft Machine and Rare Bird, but none generate the frenzy at this late date quite like the quartet led by guitarist/vocalist Steve Morgen, first unleashed in 1969. Even before dropping needle on groove, the stark black-and-white sleeve with inset Edvard Munch lithograph, in contrast to the multicoloured hues so prevalent then, makes an immediate statement. And then the music makes another immediate statement... A foreboding bass riff and staccato drumming introduce 'Welcome To The Void', and for the next thirty-eight minutes one is hurled headlong into a vortex of dual-guitar overload, lyrically woven with romantic and Victorian imagery residing on a tab of microdot. World Psychedelia has at last given this near-perfect album a proper presentation, reproducing the original insert with new transcriptions of the handwritten lyrics and, for the first time, including the rare 7" mono versions of 'She's The Nitetime' and 'Of Dreams'. Radio stations didn't bite on the single, Probe closed up shop, and the world became a decidedly sadder place."
