It has to be exciting to watch a star being born, and that's how the people who saw Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble's stunning show in 1983 at Toronto's tiny El Mocambo club must have felt. Live at the El Mocambo captures the majesty of muscular, sweaty blues-rock in an intimate setting -- in the way that, some might say, God intended. Live in Austin, Texas is a strong compilation of the band's two Austin City Limits performances, but Live at the El Mocambo blows it away in terms of hunger and raw power. Vaughan, bassist Tommy Shannon, and drummer Chris Layton open with the fine instrumentals "Testify" and "So Excited." Then Vaughan really hits his stride and uncorks a perfect cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)." "Pride and Joy" remains the best example of Vaughan's talent for combining a catchy melody with snappy licks. The fierce "Texas Flood" is truly mind-blowing -- Vaughan's playing is splendid, but he also tosses in some fancy showmanship by playing his guitar behind his back. "Hug You Squeeze You" is a playful tune that should have been lifted and placed on an album, perhaps on one of the "greatest hits" collections. Vaughan pays tribute to Hendrix again with "Third Stone from the Sun"; he thrashes on his famously mangled sunburst Stratocaster and coaxes unholy noises out of it. It's as if Pete Townshend took possession of him in that moment. During the first encore, "Lenny," Vaughan demonstrates his capacity for subtlety, foreshadowing the In Step favorite "Riviera Paradise." The DVD includes interviews with Shannon and Layton. One anecdote relates how Vaughan once became terribly upset when he learned he was headlining a concert instead of opener B.B. King.

If you ask yours truly: this is one of the greatest live electric blues/rock albums in the history of the genre. The first time I'd heard it, I was absolutely CERTAIN I was listening to Jimi Hendrix. No one else comes even close  There was only one - and one only - legitimate heir to the late, great   Jimi Hendrix. And you are looking at him. RIP, Stevie!

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. (a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is apparently pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(c)           The record comes in a PVC inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.

-        Cover has a slight warp along the bottom seam; this has absolutely no effect on the record.

-         Cover has some fraying/wear along the lower seam

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams  (nothing significant)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

-         Cover has a small, rectangular, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No yellowing from aging

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.
