A few weeks ago, I got a call from an old friend who'd been a part of the Sydney inner city punk/indie scene from about 1977-84 (his older brother was in a great Detroit-style garage-punk band at the time)...anyway he was clearing house and wanted to get rid of his record collection. So I bought it all. He's a cool guy who'd had a passion for the whole tribal Aussie punk/indie/Detroit-inspired/Radio Birdman thing, plus the post-punk/synth/'little bands'/M Squared scene too and had bought a lot of classics at the time...plus other random goodies of occasional or minimal rarity and high on quality - it's great stuff...I remember he used to shop at Phantom a lot, a few even have old Phantom price stickers on them still - I left them on.
Anyway, this record below is one of that collection:

ORIGINAL FIRST PRESSING?: Yes, it is...
- Very hard to find...it remains the ONLY foreign artist ever released by this...errr...legendary Australian indie label...Unique pic cover...300 only!
Why 300?
...OK, there were originally 800 exactly pressed (I owned the record label back then)...and 500 were sent by ship to BOMP! (in the USA, who this had been licensed from). The ship never made it to the US and none of those 500 have ever surfaced. I assume destroyed on route. I knew the freight company folk and they logged the box as disappearing somewhere between New Zealand and Hawaii. Left only the 300 we flogged off here, mostly in Sydney. Being the consignee, and having investigated it to as much of a degree as possible, I know all this to be true...maybe there's a gang of latent Stiv fans on American Samoa...or maybe they're bobbing around the Pacific with Wilson, the coconut from "Castaway"…but anyway, the consignment never made it to the USA.
The deal with BOMP! had been that we'd trade them for BOMP! stock. I'd wondered if they'd arrived somehow and Greg hadn't let on, but Suzy (Shaw) was a close confidante back then (still a gem!) and she insisted they never made it into the warehouse...and she'd have known. And told. Plus I had friends who worked in their warehouse (from when I'd lived in L.A. the year previously). One thing I can't remember was how the shipping company dealt with it though...I don't recall being compensated.
More trivia: the reason this was licensed was because an Australian promoter was going to tour the band here...very exciting stuff, being that at that stage the only 'punk' band to have toured here was Blondie (but no-one with any snottiness) – so it was a big deal...well, the records arrived from the factory on a Monday in July 1980 at midday...by 2pm the promoter had pulled out of the tour...hence there was not even the tiniest modicum of interest, we lost money, and the 300 copies dribbled out to a scattering of converts over the next year or so till exhausted. There y' go…that’s the tale that goes with this wee gem.
