PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Please give us 5 stars in each category through the feedback system, and we will be able to effectively continue to fulfill your passion for rare and collectible music! BEAUTIFUL Original 1971 first pressing REALLY great blues rocker album, with impressive guitar leading the way and all throughout, reminiscent of 'Cream' meeting 'Peter Green led Fleetwood Mac' at times. Side 1 is mostly hard blues rock, while side 2 has a west coast vibe.
The band, Freight Train, was formed by The Reds, founding member, Rick Shaffer, in 1968. The line-up went through many personnel changes before arriving at the one that appears on the 1971 album, "Just The Beginning," on Fly By Nite records, a subsidiary of the Lost-Nite and Crimson labels, owned by Philadelphia record man Jerry Greene. Greene released a catalog of doo wop and oldies hits in the 1960’s, most notably the hit record by The Soul Survivors, "Expressway To Your Heart," and today owns the compilation label, Collectibles, located in Narberth, PA.
The Freight Train albums’ line-up was Rick Shaffer on lead guitar and back-up vocals, Steve Martina on guitar and lead vocals, Jim Peters on bass, and Tommy Geddes on drums. The album is a collection of Chicago blues standards done in a aggressive British blues style, ala Cream/P. Green Fleetwood Mac that included some of the great master works of Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon, T-Bone Walker, Sonny Boy Williamson and the great Magic Sam. It also contained a rare track, "Rollin Man," by F. Mac guitarist Peter Green.
The band played all the venues of the time period, from outdoor Festivals to University gigs, coffee houses, and as the opening act for other more established bands. Then, just prior to recording their next album, this time of original blues and R&B, Steve Martina decided to totally stop playing music. His departure created quite a hole in the line-up, especially since Martina was principle vocalist and writer of the new material that had a bluesrockin' sound.
Nevertheless, Martina was replaced by guitarist/vocalist, John Rostkowski, a talented and distinctive vocalist/songwriter. The next, and final, upset for the band was changing management because of an unfulfilled promise to get the band off Fly By Nite, and on RCA. So, in 1973, Freight Train pulled into the station and disbanded.
These days over 40+ years later, “Just The Beginning,” is recognized as a nugget of "Heavy Psych Blues" in the collectors market, and the "Acid Archives.” Rare. hard to find original 1971 copies of the album sell on the internet for whatever a collector will pay, sometimes in the high three $$$ figues range.
