Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible.

Posting to Russia: Yes, I do post to Russia. But delivery can take up to 4 to 6 weeks from the UK. So please be patient. I will submit a tracking number to the winning bidder, and when the packet arrives there it can be followed online using the Russian post website.

Label/Format/Detail: A&M – original mustard format with matt, fairly smooth surfaces. As seen, this copy is a red translucent pressing – when held directly below bright light (a light bulb is perfect for this), it is seen to be red. Translucent means light will pass through an object, but it cannot be seen through. Viewed in normal room light, this looks like a standard black record.

Label Conditions: Both look very clean, fresh and attractive with barely any spindle marks. That always great news, especially on a label that will show them freely. Also this copy is very well pressed and plays impressively clean, alas that always the case on this album or label.

Brief Info: An excellent debut album from this highly versatile folk-rock band that received glowing reviews when issued. An album that pleased both folk and rock fans and their subsequent albums continued to do so thereafter. Here a trio before others joined soon after and this set remains one of the strongest ever albums and includes some wonderful Dave Cousins compositions. This copy gives a few light clues to its great age with some mild cover wear, but the record appears hardly played and is cleanly pressed with no inherent pressing faults or noises. Any visual blemishes within the pressing is hardly unusual for this Pye-pressed record. Never an easy one to find, and this a red translucent that was a joy to play-grade.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): an unlaminated gatefold format with standard back edge entrance. This has matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press, includes the A&M inner sleeve which promotes records on this label from around 1972.

Cover Front: Highly prone to wear, this front has little more than gentle rub traces. Also avoiding creasing and fading, the splendid graphic looks impressive as-seen, lacking the usual grubbiness and wear most seem to acquire. Any marks are few and light, and no sticker pulls, tears or residues.

Cover Back: Rim impression and small arc grubbiness to the very top and bottom, a little text eroded near the bottom edge. Thick heavyweight pressed records seldom fail to leave some marks to gatefold back covers, overall, this vintage cover has fared quite well put in context. So mild clues of age, but this rim impression apart, this has little else to fault, the band picture is impressive.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Practically no wear, generally clean and impressive.

Top Edges: Straight, flush and flat with minimal hint of wear.

Bottom Edges: Quite light patchy rubbing on the front, again both straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear or thickening. Record enters on the back edge, all natural and untrimmed. The front pulled to left as the spine has tilted.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression light, but this has tilted to left as stated above. A little surface crinkle and mildly discoloured, but this minimal for a white surface this age. Importantly, all text is fully present and neat as-seen.

Corners: Light tip rubs with very fine shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A splendid all-round example of this unforgiving matt cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): with only fairly mild age toning of the paper, mainly near the edges. An unlined A&M promotional inner that dates this copy around late 1971 to 1972. Hardly creased, but lightly aged with no edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and this hardly does it full justice, I am certain this has been hardly played. A very fine visual copy that is quite heavily pressed and plays beautifully. Under light, some dulling is seen within the pressing, any actual usage marks minimal, it retains fine shine. Viewed in average room light, little shows. This could be a label and record with varying pressing quality, but this one was a delight and to date one of the cleanest sounding copies of this fragile album I have heard. As seen in my picture, the record glows red under light being a translucent copy. It appears black in normal room light. Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This folk-rock classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies, especially the scarcer mustard label pressings, will outperform this significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
