'Grave New World'
A&M, UK, 1972
AMLH 68078
REGAL AND MAJESTIC is the best way to describe this superb album. Previous efforts had vascilated between full-on folk psych and airy fairy trad folk but 'Grave New World' consolidates matters by presenting a solid front of worldly progressiveness. Cousin's gets to fully unleash the vocal beast - that quivering melodramatic, almost reverential whine and the band conjure up some of the best songs they ever wrote.
Nice keyboard contributions from Blue Weaver including throbbing Hammond and spooky harpsichord. Best of all though is the tricky progressive rock arrangements - makes Argent sound like Abba. As a concise comparison I would say the mood captured on this album is similar to Jethro Tull's 'Aqualung' - folky prog with a kicking rhtym section and glowing vocals from the man with the plan.
Tough one to find in decent shape as the tri-fold cover is always trashed. Also, the vinyl is blood red when held to a bright light.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
Pressing: A&M, UK, 1972 - original Brown/Mustard label
Vinyl: Nice clean condition. Evidence of a couple of lone spindle marks on labels but virtually no other signs of use. A couple of micro surface scuffs (note NOT scratches)when viewing in extreme light. When held to a bright light the vinyl is blood red! Grades as top almost shop fresh MINT-!
Cover: Again, no signs of use. Issued in a beautifully illustrated tri-fold gatefold cover - notoriously difficult to find in clean condition as the three way fold out cover displays even the faintest of use. This one is the best I've ever seen - pristine. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and no creases. Spine is straight, stiff and completely uncrushed. Beautiful and impossible to find like this 43 years after release. Grades as a top shop fresh MINT!
