Summary
This single was the second 45 released in the UK by folk- (& later prog-) rock band The Strawbs. The A-side track was taken from the band’s eponymously titled first album. This copy of the single is an Advance Promo featuring a custom label design. The release date (’22 NOV 1968’) is rubber-stamped on the A-side.
The A-side has been signed by the band’s founder members, Dave Cousins and Tony Hooper. I personally obtained these signatures on 8th May 2000 after the band played a gig at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London’s South Bank. The band’s full six-man electric line-up (Dave Cousins, Dave Lambert, Richard Hudson, John Ford, Blue Weaver and Brian Willoughby) played this concert and Tony Hooper joined them on stage for a brief guest spot. As ever, band members made themselves available in the bar area afterwards which is where I caught up with them.
The A-side playing surface is an above-average VG grade. The B-side grades at Excellent. The audio quality of both sides is VG++.
The A-side label is in lovely condition and, as mentioned, bears the two signatures (see scanned image). The B-side label is unmarked apart from a little rub wear on some of the raised surfaces. There is slight evidence of spidering on the A-side label (where the record has momentarily come into contact with the top of the spindle when placed on the turntable).
The sleeve is an original A&M sleeve. It is in nice VG condition with no writing, splits or stickers and displays good strong colour.
The 2000 Tour Programme is in pristine unmarked condition and is included with this record for it’s relevance to the signing of the record’s label by Dave Cousins and Tony Hooper as it mentions the tour date when the record was signed. As well as including illustrated articles on each member of the 2000 Tour line-up there is also a four-page history of the band in celebration of their return to the Queen Elizabeth Hall 30 years after their highly acclaimed 1970 gig when the band’s line-up included Rick Wakeman.
Both sides of this record play really well and the programme is a delight. I am confident the successful bidder will be pleased with this package.

Notes about my Records
Record Gradings
The gradings I use are those defined by Record Collector, sometimes supplemented by + or – signs for fine-tuning. For example an otherwise Excellent record with light scuff marks which are purely cosmetic and have no impact upon audio quality might merit an EX- rating rather than a wholesale downgrading to VG. At the end of the day record gradings are always subjective, but I try hard to be accurate. Record Collector defines seven gradings ranging from Mint down to Bad. I seldom offer a record in anything less than Very Good condition unless it is particularly rare or collectable. These are the definitions I use:
Mint (M): The record is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items (eg booklet, poster, lyric sheet) are in perfect condition. Sealed or unplayed items should be Mint.
Excellent (EX): The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
Very Good (VG): The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
Good (G): The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
Lower grades are defined but I rarely use them.
My assessment of a record's condition is based on my experience of 25 years occasional trading (record fairs, mail order, retail sales and eBay).
