  SUN RA & HIS ARKESTRA LP THE ANTIQUE BLACKS (Saturn Records 81774). Released 1978.


  Very nice & well-preserved original US stereo pressing from 1978. From a 1974 live performance in Philadelphia. Strange & intriguing cover design, to say nothing of the music & song titles. (To wit: "Would I For All That Were.") The front sheet is hand-colored with a magic marker, but this only covers about an inch square. At the point of "manufacture", the back cover sheet was merely taped to the plain outer jacket. Cover appears to be originally made of xeroxed materials. That's part of its charm. The label is also a thing of great beauty: beautiful totemic logo & textured surface. (The thinking within the Arkestra compound must have been "Why should we pay a printer to make our labels when we can just run them off ourselves & cut them out with scissors!")

  I am convinced this is an early early pressing because I know the original owner, who has been collecting LPs since the 60s. (Matrix #: "SUN-RA 81774-A/B").

[Curtis Fukuda says the guitarist was "a medium height Afro-American of lean build", putting the quietus on intriguing rumors about Ted Nugent, who told Melody Maker that he once made a session with The Ra. John Gilmore says that Dale Williams used his wa-wa pedal a lot but thinks 1974 is too early for him; he recalls a guitarist named Sly around this time.]









COVER - NEAR MINT

    No seam splits, stains, marks, cuts, tears, smudges, creases, bubbles, water damage, cut-out marks, writing, price tags, or stickers on the thick, sturdy cover. No ring wear, speckling or rubbing. Virtually no corner banging. Rich color throughout cover & label. Narrow band of dryness across the top of the back cover-not sure I would call that "damage" since there is no stain or breaks in the paper, just some faint discoloration. Label is excellent with no blemishes. The amazing textured surface has been marvellously preserved. Sharp-cut hole free of spindle brushings. 

  DISC - NEAR MINT

  We give great importance to grading our items accurately. Visually inspected & graded to be free of scratches, scuffs, stains, skips, warping, streaking, or residue on the disc or dead wax. One or two tiny inaudible cloud shadows of a half-inch or so. Very slight loss of rainbow sheen. Album has been safely stored upright in climate-controlled conditions.
