RARE ORIGINAL 1976 LP ON CREST
SUE BARKER - SUE BARKER
SLEEVE: VG- as with most copies of this LP it suffers from laminate loss which has left it rather sticky. All in one piece tho.
VINYL: VG+ paper scuffs, hairlines, light marks, light scratches, plays with light pops/crackles in places
Sue Barker was a “jazz singer” from Adelaide who seems to have disappeared into obscurity now. This was her only release, and from the quality of it, God only knows why she isn’t still doing her thing. There’s a great range of vocal styles on display in this recording, from covers of Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday, right through to a great version of ‘What’s Going On’ and ‘I Heard It Through the Grapevine’, both by Marvin Gaye. But the killer track on here is her fantastic version of Curtis Mayfield’s ‘Love To The People’ which is, as they say on the Dusty Groove website, “worth the price of the album.” Finding this record isn’t easy.......
The best track on the album is her version of Curtis Mayfield’s – “Love to the People”. The band really funks it up on this cut, the rhythm section lays down a nice, fat groove, laced with some very funky sax and horns. Sue’s vocals drift in and out of the groove seamlessly. Just awesome! With great versions of “Groovin, What’s going on", "I Heard It Through the Grape Vine” and also “Think, How Sweet It Is” and more. RARE Aussie Soul-Funk!
