FROM A COLLECTION THAT BELONGED TO A RECORD COMPANY EMPLOYEE WHO WAS WORKING FOR THE VIRGIN
RECORD LABEL IN LONDON IN THE 1980'S/90'S.

Purpose:
Acetate records are not intended for mass production or sale, but rather for evaluating the sound quality and ensuring the music translates well to the final vinyl record.
Construction:
They consist of a thin, aluminum disc coated with a lacquer, which is then cut with a recording lathe to create the grooves that hold the audio signal.
Mastering Stage:
Acetates are created during the mastering stage of record production, allowing engineers to make adjustments to the recording before the master disc, from which the actual records will be reproduced, is created.
Test Pressing:
They serve as a test pressing, allowing for a preview of the final product and the opportunity to make any necessary changes before the record is pressed.
Not Actual Acetate:
Despite the name, acetate records don't contain any actual acetate, but rather a lacquer coating.
Durability:
Acetates are designed for a limited number of plays and are prone to surface noise and lacquer flaking, making them unsuitable for mass production.
