Legendary blues singer Bessie Smith sold hundreds of thousands of 78s during her tragically short recording career, and her 120 sides have been endlessly reissued on LPs and CDs in the past 65 years. But only once were her classic blues issued on 45RPM records.
In 1951 Columbia released 24 singles, in 4 box sets of 6 records each, of her greatest performances. They were never reissued and remain the only Bessie Smith 45s available to collectors or jukeboxers (with the sole exception of Gimme A Pigfoot, which Columbia issued as a "race" 45 on its subsidiary Okeh label in 1950). Both Cold In Hand Blues and St. Louis Blues feature no less a sideman than another legend, Louis Armstrong. Satchmo was at the height of his awesome powers when he backed Bessie on this pair of 1920s recordings.
This scarce single has never been reissued in the 64 years since it was released by Columbia Records and was not available for individual sale in 1951. It's in pristine condition and will hold a prized spot in your collection or jukebox...
